I'm sorry as I'm sure this has been done to death on here but....

This morning I witnessed yet another reason why texting and driving is no good thing.

I had to turn around and take a diversion due to queued traffic this morning as did the person who was texting...

I followed her watching her nearly drive into the kerb (in a 40 zone through a village), then wandering over the center line in the NSL zone, all this time failing to maintain a constant pace too.

If she had to let somebody know she was going to be late, why didn't she simply call??

Only a couple of days ago, I witnessed yet another woman driving toward me, her eyes clearly looking down into her lap (presumably texting as well).

We need some kind of mobile phone blocking devices in moving vehicles IMHO.

this isn't meant to be a rant - so no marking please!

Phone jammers are a stupid idea- firstly, what about passengers or genuine emergencies? Secondly, it would probably extend its jamming outside the car to a certain extent, resulting in a dropped call for people outside the car whenever it goes past!

EDIT: not to mention that a jammer wouldn't stop idiots reading texts that they've already received, or typing one out only to realise that it won't be sent till they get out of the car.

We don't need jammers, we just need the roads policing.

Contentious I agree - but that was the intention. smile

Agreed 100%, this is the reason we have so many knobheads on the roads.

Unfortunately, there is no way to really combat this enough without the points being made above being an issue.

There are too many people still using phones to their ears to make calls and not using hands free or bluetooth, and far too many people who I follow and can see in their rear view as they glance down every couple of seconds, occasionally looking up and making a frantic turning adjustment, making it even more obvious that they have no intention of paying attention to the road ahead.

Unfortunately, these people don't seem to understand that its one thing putting their own lives at risk, especially doing so at fairly high speeds, but its a completely different kettle of fish for the people they may eventually hit head on, or cause damage to.

Worst example of this I've witnessed was a young blonde girl (early 20's) in a VW Bora. Texting looking down at the phone in her lap whilst driving down a hill on the offside when I was driving up. I stopped but she didn't see me to the last moment and missed hitting my car by a few inches. She also looked totally obivious to why I was shouting all sorts of obscenities (through the closed window) at her.

It gets worse - this all happened outside a school at kicking out time and there were kids running around everywhere. Fcensoredking stupid inconsiderate bint - makes me cross just thinking about it. furious

For the record - no she wasn't hot

This has had a massive effect on attitudes towards drink driving. As long as drivers think they are unlikely to get caught using a phone and the concequences are minimal anyway then they will not change their behaviour.
