Ever hear a song that takes you back to a specific car you had, heard the Soup Dragons "Im Free" this morning and it took me back to 1990, Stockport College and my MK1 Golf GTI.

Other song/car pairs,

Fine Time by New Order, 1969 MK1 Capri, just driving round for the sake of it.

King of Rock and Roll (Albuquerque) by Prefab Sprout, a mate bought a new Golf Driver in 1989, black, thought he was the Dogs whatsits, we couldnt afford new cars so it was a thing of wonder, new car, new tape and he bought Prefab Sprout. He didnt have many tapes so it just auto reversed all the time he was in it, now we got sick of it even in the limited times we went in his car so his girlfriend got really sick of it, she warned him she would launch it out of the window, she carried out this threat and got dumped on the side of the road, end of engagement !

Same old Capri, when my dad had it, Tubular Bells on 8 Track, remember being a bit scared by the caveman bit as a 5 year old.

Manchild by Neneh Cherry, when working at the garage at the time, was on when a colleague (stoned) changed the oil on a customers Escort 1.3L and didnt replace the sump plug, sat there revving it having strained 5 litres of 20/50 budget oil through the engine onto the floor, costs us a new engine !

Just me or do you have the same type of memories ?

Cliched as this is, Money For Nothing reminds me of my Porsche 924S and its fantastically '80s pinstripe interior.

Vintage Queen by Goldfinger reminds me of driving my mum's Saxo out to the bike trails in South Wales when I was at uni.

I think those are the only car-specific ones.

Embarrassingly Lady Gaga reminds me of my old Renault, because I used to car pool to school with it and my passengers would always put her last album on.

Prefab Sprout "Cars and Girls" - My Rover 220GSi.

I had a lovely weekend (well it rained on the Saturday and I nearly went home, but Sunday was glorious!) skiing after Easter at St Anton on my own once.

I had Prefab Sprout on the Casette Player (ah remember them? biggrin) as I drove back to Munich on the Sunday afternoon and it alway reminds of that trip and that weekend.

"Souls of Mischief - 93 'til infinity" always reminds me of my Datsun Cherry, because that's what was playing when I crashed it into a lamp post, back in November 1993.

Always a good one to pop on the pub jukebox, then watch from afar too.

Simon & Garfunkel: The Boxer from Bridge Over Troubled Water (I think)

It was the only 8 track cartridge I had in an old Mk 3 Zephyr in the early 1970s.

The Boxer was my preferred track for some reason.

V88, enjoyed that, great post !

Reminded me of the Britpop 90s thing a bit, at that time I had various cars but always borrowed from a selection of Rover 214's, the early shape one and they remind me of charging round the lanes of Shropshire between animal feed mills and the like with my job, at that time I remember National Express by the Divine Comedy, Space Man by Babylon Zoo and as you mentioned Brimfull of Asha by cornershop, bit of Mark and Lard and the late great John Peel was still plying his trade.

The Amorous Humphrey Plugg by Scott Walker reminds me of my old Porsche 924, simply because it was what I was listening to when I first rolled up in it at a housewarming party where a large proportion of my mates were. Granted, it was cheaper than anything they had, but hey, my first car was a Porsche, and the opening line "Hello Mr. Big-shot/Hey, you're lookin' smart" summed up my smugness at the time. Unfortunately the car was a bit of an embarrassment - the phrase '1980s drug-dealer' got bandied about quite a lot. My fault for buying an '80s Porsche in Alpine White with massive black 'Porsche' decals on the doors.

Achilles' Last Stand by Led Zeppelin brings to mind my Fiat X1/9, mainly because when I owned it I used to drive in and out of London a lot, visiting friends, and I used to set myself the challenge of getting from the M25 to my exit of the M40 before Led Zep's 'Latter Days' had finished. ALS being the longest song, it tended to work the accelerator.

Machinery by Propaganda is a song I associate with my MR2, for one reason - it was very loud and antisocial, bright red and very '80s. The song features a keyboard riff straight out of a Miami Vice action sequence, and I was driving through slick-but-uniform, sleepy Marlow at the time, with its resale-spec BMWs and Audis and its in-keeping-with-the-local-area ethos. I was feeling particularly pissed off for some reason so I popped the glass roof open, whacked the volume up, and drove through the centre in a gear lower than perhaps I should have done. For some reason it's just stuck in my mind.

As for my Alfa - well, I've driven it everywhere and listened to everything in it, but no doubt when I've sold it there'll be at least one song that brings back some memory.
