I know you guys hate "what cars" but here goes anyway.

Can you suggest a car that:

Costs less than £4k
Is a diesel (or at least can regularly return 40, if not 45+ MPG)
Has a boot (i.e. saloon, coupe, Ford Mondeo-hatch as a pose to something like a 306 etc)
Has 160+ HP (for hypotheticals sake - can also mod it as long as it's within the £4k budget)
Seats 4

Ideally RWD, but not essential.

Something vaguely sporting would be nice as well.

Suggestions to start the ball rolling:
Vectra V6 Diesel,
Mondeo ST155,
BMW 320d (e46).

Bora 150 TDI or a Seat Toledo 130/150 TDI as a cheaper alternative. Both can be remapped to 160bhp for £300.

Can probably get a Signum for that, either the 1.9 CDTi, or the 3.0V6 CDTi engine.

Better to go with the 3.0 CDTI, the 1.9 (especially the 150) is supposedly plagued with various EGR, clutch, flywheel, injector, and turbo problems. I thought about a Vectra with the same engine when I bought my Mondeo but was put right off!

I think the 2.0 BMW diesel engine has lots of similar issues too.

Go on www.honestjohn.co.uk and look up everything you can afford, and go from there.

Might be worth going for a petrol model if you don't want big bill.

RWD is the limiting factor.

Late 90's Benz C250TD (150bhp)
Omega?

A bit smaller than I was looking for to be honest.

I do about 20k a year, so a petrol is a guaranteed big bill every time I go near a pump...

I would of thought out of the Vectra or the Signum, the Vectra would be the better choice?

Not really keen on the Signum anyway due to the hatch.

Can't see a 1.9 with more than 130 BHP?

However the 2.5 Quattro looks quite good... although the insurance is a little on the high side.

Both cars insurance are unfortunately too much for me to afford - although I do have a big soft-spot for the Omega.

Why 160bhp?

Oddly specific, since most decent diesels in your price range will have <150hp

I've already got an MG ZT CDTi kicking out ~150-160 BHP so I'm thinking "what next"

Group 14, against the BMW you suggested group 13?

Maybe it's the injuries from all those panama hats flying off the parcel shelf in accidents.

Dont be put off by a petrol. I have a Vectra 1.8 and do about 30k a year. A colleague in my company runs a Vectra 1.9 cdti 150. In 3 years i have had my Veccy its only needed routine servicing. believe it or not all 4 tyres have 3 mil tread left and I have only just changed the discs and pads. All have done 80k. In approximately 2 years my colleague has had the diesel he has had 2 injectors replaced, an alternator, manifold, egr valve and the dual mass flywheel and clutch out of warranty. We both do similar mileage. When I weigh up what I spend on petrol (I get about 44mpg on my motorway runs) compared to his diesel I have spent alot less. The above items being replaced was thousands plus factor in the higher purchase price aswell. Plus there is also no turbo to go when you hit higher mileage.

Modern diesels do tend to suffer with problems which are not cheap to fix.

E36 325 tds too old? 140 ish bhp, apparently easy re-map to 170ish bhp. Tough to find a good one though, most probably rusted away/sky high miles/barried/etc. And RWD, and 6 cylinders too IIRC.

Not keen on the E36 unfortunately, I think the E46 is the much more hansome sibling.

Insurance groups don't mean that much for me at least, it's more finding the "niche" car that is actually quite cheap to insure (i.e. my ZT, or the V6 Vectra)

it is not RWD but then why would you want RWD on a road car?

^ This. 163bhp, mappable (if you want) to 180+. 53mpg on a run and 40 average.

Comfy seats too.
