I'm stumped, whilst driving to work in my older 2003 car I see a lot of shiny nice and sparkly cars on the road.

I'd like a nice and shiny newish car and recently checked on a 2010 530D. Spoke to the salesman and it would be '£590 per month please sir'.

Is everyone else in nice cars on the road:
Loaned up to the gills?
Company car drivers?
Have recently deceased relatives?
Drug Dealers?
Don't have hobbies to spend their money on and thus save all of their cash for ever?

Is there some secret that I'm missing? I'm not exactly skint as i'm an IT contractor but £590 per month is more than I wanted to pay, more like £400 ish.

N.B This is not a whinge thread (supposed to be light hearted), it's just that my old Skoda is suffering after 5 years of family life and it's time for a nice car.

Mostly option 1 & 2, you'd be surprised how little some people will work for if you offer them a shiny new car.

£400/month should get you in something nice.

Thanks Troc, thats a massive help. smile

I was looking into leasing, but the comments from some people about being massivley nervous when driving parking regarding scratches, kerbing etc put me off.

Considering your (our) employer, three years is an impressive feat.

I bet the Elise cost substantially less than the Skunk, all in. hehe

Plus, I was single at the time.

If you're prepared to compromise on the engine, a 520d can be had for £400/month. If you aren't, work harder!

If you don't mind Mercs, you can get one with more power than the beemer for a lot less?

Pick something within your price range, then? Or get a better paying job.

I think my car's very nice, and it's often very shiny too.

Pay me £590 a month, and you'll have paid it off in four months wink

As has been said, it's all about perspective. As for even just £400 a month keeping you in something new and MOT-free.. My two MOTs so far have cost me £50.

Which is the cost of two MOTs. biggrin

It's like someone spending five grand more on a car to get a diesel to save money.. Why? I see far more satisfaction in taking something ordinary and making it look right or even special, not to mention avoiding the false economies that everyone else gets fooled by.

Don't run away with the idea that "everyone" is driving a brand new 530d, even though it can be easy to convince yourself that's the case.

Most new car buyers go for small and medium size cars from the volume brands. Last month's sales top 5 were: Fiesta, Golf, Astra, Corsa, Focus.

I know plenty of IT contractors who've had rate increases recently, plenty of whom were in the 300-500/day range anyway.

Serious question, considered moving to another industry with whatever tranferable skills you have? £590/month isn't that much if your Ltd is turning over £10-12k/month.
