Someone at work or in a social circle who knows nothing about cars, knows you're a petrolhead and have some knowledge.... So asks for advice. You give it. They then go out and buy what you told them NOT to buy, and proceed to spend the first month telling you how brilliant their new purchase is, before spending the next 6months telling you exactly what's wrong with it?

3 instances spring to mind instantly:

1) female friend: bought 1400 Tigra (2004) despite being told by me and 1x friend who's mechanic, that it wouldn't give the MPG she wanted, and would be steep to insure. Is now ranting frequently about MPG and insurance.

2) father. Changed from 4000cc V6 Ford Explorer (auto) to a 2006 derv Shogun Sport (L200 chassis and engine) for his tow vehicle. Despite being told 270bhp to 100bhp and 1/4 the torque would bug him. Now gets only 5mpg better, yet pays 4times the insurance, and 3times the RFL... And constantly berates the manual slugging derv bus for its st allround ness.

3) OH's boss, wanted a car that will do for her new job as roving manager, doing 25k per annum upwards. Suggested medium sized diesel, as company fuel allowance etc would favour her, and would suit motorway runs.

OH NO, she buys Yaris 1300 petrol st box, and now complains daily about how it only does 25mpg on a motorway, and is slower than an iceberg and feels unsafe when lorries about. THE EXACT THINGS I TOLD HER!

Rant over! I don't profess to be always right, and frequently make errors of judgement with my own vehicles (spending money on stuff, get bored, sell)....... But some things are just common sense surely?

I now expect to be thoroughly slated, told how much of a cock I am and so on...

Glad it aint just me.

I now almost daily get my dad complaining about how the stgun Sport (laughable 2nd part of its name) wont pull a duvet, let alone his 7m caravan......... The female friend whinging that her Tigra chews fuel far more than the 1400 Puma she had. FOLDING METAL ROOFS WEIGH A LOT NUMBNUTS.

Not to mention my mates little brother (21) who went from a 1600 astra to a 1800 TURBO audi A4 (2005) and then 3months later, sold it yesterday because he cant afford fuel or insurance. After I suggested he check both pre-purchase, AND DIDNT!

All the mechanics that I have met and lots of so called experts slag the Dolomite Sprint but I have had mine since 1996 and still love doing track days in it!

I am neither an expert nor a mechanic by any means. But can't see how using one for track days is an issue?

I was meaning people who buy a certain vehicle that completely contradicts what they are looking for... Usually either because it's "pretty" or because they listened to the reputation a certain brand comes with.

OH got her first company car a few years ago and chose a boggo 1.9PD A3 over a 2.0CR Golf with all the toys, mainly because of those rings on the front, and my advice to get the Golf.

It was a short list and these were the only two worth talking about.

She agreed she'd done the wrong thing and wouldn't be such as badge snob next time.

Fast forward four years and a boggo 116d ES is on the list, with no toys, or a 1.4 TFSI DSG Golf with all the toys...

Guess which one is on the driveway?

Im hoping the golf, as she would have "listened" but I can't help but feel it's a pov spec 116d that screams "COMPANY CAR, BOTTOM OF LIST" so loudly that you can hear her coming from the other side of the county?

Yesterday, he was asking me about a 2.5V6 Corsa B, that's clearly been fking abused, ragged silly, with some terrible mods etc, and i tell him what i think. That it's 1 tonne of someone elses problems, and is a moneypit waiting to happen.

HAHA it's not just me that thinks that then.

PS Is the 1 series white with steel wheels?

And OP yes I think I am the person who often gets asked and more often gets ignored. Hence the Ex Mrs buying a Pug 206 because it had 10k less miles on it than a Polo which she felt would be worn out, you can imagine how many faults the 206 developed in the first month after the 3 month warranty- LOADS. My step mum decided she must have a 4x4 to be safe in following a crash in a Ka. She decided on a Rav4, I said get the diesel version as she does a fair few miles but nope she got the petrol an moans about how much fuel it uses and now she wants to sell moans that the petrol version isn't worth as much as a diesel.

Work colleagues generally heed my advice and warnings. Although it doesn't bother if they don't.

Family, on the other hand, will spend the money time after time without asking me, and then, when something goes wrong, want to know why I didn't help them in the first place.

really good mate of mine...a pilot. LOVES his toys, £3k road bike, £3k mountain bike, Triumph Street triple, re-mapped Golf Gti...loves the research 'finding the car' part of the experience. His partner is changing her car: a 2.5TDi Avant Sportline...
So with no debt and in no rush they set aside £20k.
Something stylish, economical, maybe open top (she likes them)
BMW 1?
500 Abarth?
Test drove both
The final decision was between a brand new fully specc'd C3 or Focus. (neither open top)
They went Focus £20k over 3 years spunked on what will eb one of the most common sights on the road (I know its a good car...but not a good way to spend £20k on a 2nd car!)

No, especially not if any of the work was carried out by the person that wrote the advert and is happy to admit insurance fraud. But it is rapaid and quicker than many other fast cars.

Seems sensible enough to me. The new Focus is quite rated, so if she just wants a brand new practical hatchback for £20K and she likes it then it's probably a perfectly reasonable selection.

Glad it aint just me.

As for the 1series, Im sure it's a nice car...... but recession white, does it have a little green E on the back of it?

My dad not content with 1x ignoring me, then bought the following:

1996, N reg BRG Jaguar XK8........... mint condition, 1owner, 24k on the clock. Bought from classic car show at Birmingham NEC.

What does he use it for? 4miles each way to work...... and takes it on a steelworks all day long, upto it's arches in water/coke/coal/ore etc. Can't usually see the numberplates/windows/lights. Complained that his paintwork was dull, so spent a grand on paint repairs, to do it all over again
