The girlfriends dad is looking for a 4 seater soft-top. He has around 4-5K to spend and i intially said about either a Merc CLK, Late E36 or early E46 or a bottom end Audi A4.

He spoke to one of his mates who mentioned the Saab 9-3 or Volvo C70 as alternatives.

Now the question is what are these like? Having a quick look on the trader you can pick up some nice examples, with all the kit, leather kit.

A valid alternative to the usual german makes?

A good 9-3 is a lot of car for the money. A few simple & cheap upgrades will make it quite an impressive tool. The MB will have rust issues in that price bracket- my 15 year-old Saab had no rust whereas my 8 year-old MB had all four arches plus the boot lid.

I'm biased as I have a Saab, but they're worth a look.

My boss had a 9-3 soft top and said the handling was like driving a boat. I think he had the SE version.

That the same across all the range? What cheap mods can you do?

I'd opt for the E46 or A4. Volvo & Saab are too cheap inside for my liking, and the Merc has rust issues as previously mentioned.

What sort of car is he after? Is performance and driving dynamics important or do they want more of a cruiser?

Also how big or practical do the rear seats need to be?

I think both the Saab and Volvo look good. But I'm sure that's probably the extent of their talent from a drivers point of view.

If it's just something fun and funky, then I have to say these appeal for being highly individual and different.

The roll bar is said to make it very pleasant in the back too, with very little buffeting. And I have to say I still love the interior/dash design.

Why? I suspect they'd be just as comfy and arguably a nicer place to sit too. Probably less scuttle shake too and certainly more individual.

I think he is more after a comfortable cruiser, rather than a something to chuck into the corners. The rear seats need to be practical for passengers.

I thought ethier a 2.0t Saab or 2.4GT Volvo would give him that cruiser feel, with a bit of power if needed.

I do know that he likes all the gadets, and that prestige feel of leather etc. Thats why I thought a top end Volvo or Saab would give all that but undercut the german makes on price. More for your buck...

Uprated anti roll bar is circa 30 quid and 30 minutes at worst to fit. Totally transforms the handling. Poly bushes help, too. Uprated ARB as above, manual boost controller, braided hoses for the brakes, forge bypass valve, plus silicon hoses total about #120 if you shop around (plus labour).

Note it's a four seater, not five for the convertible.

I’m quite surprised you didn’t recommend this one as its much closer to the others!
