scooby or evo?
Discussion
I should have about 5k to spend to on something jap and turbo. The scooby and evo seem like a good option. Which one is better? Which of either model should I look out for? In general I need help as I know sweet fa about these cars.

Doubt you'd be able to get an Evo VII for that money, so you'll be looking at the V & VI (late 90s) they come in many specs do you want an official (Colt Cars) UK model or would you consider a JDM import?
Also, many will have been modified (some well some not so well), you need to give us more to go on that just 5K, have you looked at insurance? It isn't cheap.

Can't be any more expensive than the Elise plus I am over 40 so insurance doesn't really come into it.Also, many will have been modified (some well some not so well), you need to give us more to go on that just 5K, have you looked at insurance? It isn't cheap.
Would consider a JDM import. Seems like I can stretch to a Evo V,VI GSR or if I go for the top of the budget in Imprezza a STI RA or Type R.
I am selling the Elise as I am buying a house and its essentially money tied up which could go towards my deposit. Shame as I love that little car.
I've had 3 impreza's in the past
1) Classic Sti = very good car and the fastest car I had owned up til then (very grippy)
2) Sti Type R = totally different animal...this actually handled very well, didn't just grip
3) Blob eye Sti = regretted getting rid of the type R for this....done everything well, but didn't have the sense of occasion of the type R with the diff set mostly to rwd
my 2p

Evo's are better than Scoobies in general, but this is balanced by the fact that Evo's are more expensive to buy and to run.
Therefore if you've only got £5k you'll only get a ropey Evo, but you might get a better condition Scoob.
Buy carefully because if something goes bang the bills will be big.

Is that the DCCD diff thingy does that? 1) Classic Sti = very good car and the fastest car I had owned up til then (very grippy)

There are a lot more Scoobs around than Evos... You could spend months looking for the right IV/V at the right price in the right location, finding the right Scoob might be easier.
Buy a Scoob now, keep looking for the right Evo then sell the Scoob (or just keep the Subaru if you like it), I doubt a Subaru of that age is going to lose much money over the next 6-12 months

Subaru sounds better.
Arguably not even a consideration when buying a car, but i f
king love the noise they make.
As has been said, Evo's tend to hold their value better, and IME are cheaper and easier to work on, flat 4 engines don't make working under the bonnet terribly easy.
Whoever said an Evo will spank an Impreza, well, it depends on said Evo and Impreza, a DCCD kitted Type R will be a lot more fun than a standard Evo in my opinion.
Evo's supposedly handle better, not spent too much time driving one, but i like the handling of the Impreza's. They do understeer a little, my old one had that dialed out with a bit of front camber and set up slightly stiffer at the rear, but generally, it's not a bad thing, you get a little bit of understeer to let you know you're getting near the limit, and you can choose to do whatever you want about it, back off, plant it, whatever.
I must admit I also like the sound they (Scooby) make when they have big exhausts on them. Arguably not even a consideration when buying a car, but i f

So a type R with the DCCD diff is probably the one to look out for?
