Hi all,

I decided to take out breakdown cover with the AA on the day of purchasing my TVR last year 22nd of May for the sum of around £28.

I completly forgot about it running out and would have purchased another years cover for around the same sort of money, but today i check my bank account to find that they have taken £113.50 from my account!!!

How, why have they done this? I have had no phone call, email from them asking if i would like to continue using their service.

I have tried calling the offices but none are open now till tomorrow. Has this happened to anyone else? Will i get my money back?

Sam

They are very crafty. You will call, stuff will be done etc.
And then next year they will do the same thing.

They can only take out of your account if you've got a direct debit agreement.

Was it taken by direct debit, in which case you might have some comeback?

Or continuous credit card payment in which case you might be struggling.

Bit of a bummer, customer services then a ring to Dom Littlewood!

Hi all,

The was no direct debit set up. I simply used my debit card to pay for what i thought was a years breakdown cover.

The payment states "Debit Card - Aa Membership Basingstoke"

Surely there must be some 14 day cooling off period? I defo wont be letting this go i have just visited the AA website and even cover for four only costs £106.13 so i have no idea how they have come up with £113.50 seeing as it was only myself the membership is under!!

Very popular tactic. Auto-renewal prices jumps and they hope you miss it. I bought cover for about £55ish one year, renewal came through the following at double. Called them up and without any argument/haggling at all it went down to £60.

The problem is i bought it through a cashback website with some £20+ i recieved for going through them, obviously the AA will not be able to beat this.

Surely i must be able to cancel? I certainly wont be using them this year after this stunt.

You will have received a letter stating that you do not need to do anything to renew. And indeed, you didn't do anything. biggrin

I keep meaning to get off this scheme as I don't actually recall agreeing to it.

Similar thing happened to me, except I did get their literature and new card a month before expiry, but ignored it.

I think their terms and conditions (available on their site) do require them to have notified you in advance, giving you the opportunity to not renew membership if you so wish.

Cancelling in the 14 days after auto-renewal, they'll refund, but keep an admin fee of something like £25. If you didn't get the renewal pack you'll probably have a strong chance of them waiving this fee.

What I did however was call them to cancel (in the 14 day period) explaining I'd got a better quote from my insurer.

The cancellation team (whose job it must be to stop people leaving) simply offered to match it, and gave me nearly half of my premium back.

So all in all, phoning them up had a good result.

And whether auto-renewal is good or bad? Given the AA's fees for assisting a non member, or a member deciding to join after breaking down, the membership fee is a damn sight cheaper IMO.

I can imagine the ocmplaint list from broken down motorists who'd "forgotton" to renew but expected help would be quite a bit longer than renewed members who no longer wanted the cover.

We pay quite a lot more than that with our AA annual renewal, we've been members since the early 1990's and don't call them out very often... But, about three weeks ago we had a battery charging issue with the S2 (18.5v charging, voltage regulator failure), the dog and kids were all in the car, and we were in a position of safety... In a nature reserve car park... Friday before a bank holiday, 4pm... The van arrived at 4.45pm, he disconnected the alternator.. (And only folk with an S2 with Air Con will understand the 'Swiss watch' technology involved in that)... And then followed us home just in case battery voltage became a problem... We were home probably just over an hour later than planned... IMHO, the response and the return were brilliant, independent call out would have cost 5 years AA membership and been less efficient.

More than likely the case.

There will be a great many people who wouldn't have checked their statements and have been none the wiser.

They normally write to you 4 weeks in advance to inform you that they will take the money on the renewal date. I either cancel and rejoin later at reduced cost or they will match their own or the RACs internet price. Most companies now use this type of tactic, imagine the amount of people that don't bother to check and just pay up.

I've been a member for donkeys years and they just kept cranking it up every year. Then I finally realised you need to call them up every year and haggle the price down - and they always will. £150 premium down to about £95 just for a quick call.

You originally paid using your debit/credit card. They have taken the money by whats known as a recurring payment or continous payment authority, if you check the small print in the terms & conditions that you originally had when you first joined. By accepting the terms & conditions you have authorised them to take the renewal payment.

Only you can cancel this payment your bank/card provider will not be able to cancel it for you. Even if your card has expired/been replaced this payment will be taken. As to whether you get all or a proportion of your money back is down to the AA.

Two points.

Firstly my partner spotted this on her account at £150 and played up seriously.

Debit payment was refunded by the AA in full on the spot when she complained. I have to say she is very effective in making a point. Not someone to upset and I don't!!!!!!!

She then went to Green Flag and got the same cover for £65 from Green Flag.

Now has cover included in her insurance which as far as I can see is virtually free because she only pays £204 fully comp two drivers on a Mini Cooper which is cheap!!!

Secondly I think the AA will be obliged to refund you if you take this up and really argue your case. Telephone first and follow up with letters threatening court action.

The major consumer service players do not want trouble or bad publicity. I think that for that reason they will refund as above.

If you went to court, which I do not think you will need to do, in fact, I agree with you the 14 day cooling off period would apply.

I think they will refund. It goes without saying the AA are not good at all.

Good Luck

Both AA and RAC do this. I moved to Brittannia, who don't piss about and just renew at the same price they quote for new customers each year.

Hi all,

We after being told i had to pay a £20 canceling fee by a very very rude man at the end of the phone i requested to speak to someone higher of whom could not have been nicer.

The first guy i spoke to stated that they had sent me 3 renewals packs thus will not cancel without the fee. I had then spoke to complaints to which the lady confirmed they HAD NOT sent a renewal pack let alone three and will be refunding my payment in full.

A lesson learnt i will never be giving the AA a penny of my money again.

PS TVR's are far to reliable as i never had to make one claim!!!
