I've just flogged the X5, and have £10k burning a hole in my pocket, so fancy something that's not only fun, but sounds awesome too!

Obviously this should be answered with 3 simple letters T - V - R but my girlfriend wants to drive whatever I buy, and she's not really into sitting round waiting for engines to warm up (or the AA to arrive!) so it's a no unfortunately. In the past we've had a V6 24v Alfa GTV, Cayman S, E46 M3, Cayman S, etc which have all sounded ok — especially the Alfa! — but now we want something that sends a tingle down the spine when it fires up or it approaches the limiter! So, any ideas, or is anyone selling anything tasty? I've never had an AMG Merc, and love the sound of things like the C63 AMG, so something that sounds similar would be a winner!

We've £10k, plus maybe a few more grand if the right thing turns up, and would possibly be willing to pop a tasty exhaust system into the mix so long as it doesn't result in something a bit Max Power!

Honda S2000? Water cooled 911? I assume classics are out, but I think Stag's sound lovely (oh wait, you said reliable!)

Good call, or has been said a mustang as long as the g/f can cope with lhd.

TVR Chimaera. Don't listen to those who've never owned one telling you how unreliable they are, listen to those of us who've owned them for 10 years plus who disagree. Get a good one, use her regularly and treat her right, and she'll reward you in spades.

TVR if your heart can stand waiting for it to break and fail (the sad truth). Otherwise, I'd look for a Subaru if it's sound alone you're after. Without wanting to get into everything else that is great about a Subaru, even the naturally apirates GX Imprezas sound awesome with a good exhaust. Get a turbo powered Impreza with a good exhaust and you'll likely want to drive everywhere with the window down just so you cab listen to that incredible boxer burble sound!

Good call with the ZT smile

Bit different perhaps, an Alfa V6 of some description with a decent 'zorst? smile

LHD's a no unfortunately because of the GF. I've considered a 911 but doubt I'd get much for £10k, and unfortunately the GF hates the S2000.

M5's a good shout and I reckon 10k should get a good un.

It's funny because you seem to have missed your TVR ownership experiences out on your profile.

Buy a BMW and wait for the vanos to fail. Or a Porsche and wait for the seals to fail.

My money would go on a Monaro. smile

(Well actually it would be another TVR but you've ruled that one out!)

Standard cars have a typically muted Jag growl with some supercharger whine on top. I'd guess that a fancy exhaust might liberate more music.

They're a pretty heavy old hector, and aren't exactly nimble, but will probably feel like a lightweight compared to an X5!
