So, my Dad on his 70th birthday decided to buy a 'nice' motor, a 2009 Jaguar XF, barley with cream interior, a proper luxury car and well deserved after years of crappy company cars.

He's a good driver if slightly slower than when I was younger, very safe and looks after his car. So over the Christmas period he hit a pot hole and put a bulge in the side wall of one of the XF's tyres, Oh well, these things happen. £250 later, new tyre on car's off side front. A couple of weeks later and he notices another bulge on the rear off-side and another £250 put that right.

Two days ago, he was approaching his house along the country lane that leads to it and a large van was coming towards him with two wheels over the middle line. Dad had to gently move to the side off his lane taking him off the tarmac and onto grass/unmade road. POP....POP both the off-side tyres let go! He couldn't believe it, he was doing 15mph. That's going to set him back another £500

Today he showed me where it happened and IMO I have no idea how the tyres could have given way. Could the tyres have come off the rim slightly, letting the air out rather than puncture? Is there any way he can have the tyres examined either by Dunlop or independently?

I get the impression he dosn't want SP Sports again after this debacle.

Could the first pothole impact that damaged both offsides also have damaged the wheels? Maybe a longshot but could be worth getting the rims checked on the next tyre fitting.

Sounds like seriously bad luck.

I had similar bad luck on my Scooby a couple of years ago ... just one of those things I guess.

Feel sorry ... yes ... but it does happen ...

£250 each? How come? They are not RFT's...?

Nice choice of car smile

I've had the same tyres in a 16" and my old man has them in 19" rubber band spec without any issues. Touch wood.

You can return them to Dunlop under warranty. Chances are though, that they'll simply report that the tyres have simply been damaged.

Poor luck, though. That's enough to completely take the shine off the car.

Life can sense when you finally buy yourself something nice, and sets about to completely ruin it for you. I went through 3 tyres in 4 months on a new merc i bought myself.

They are not rft's but 20" 'j' spec specific to the car they are also quite difficult to get hold of at the mo so prices have gone up.

They do seem to be particuly easy to damage though frown

If returned to Dunlop they will examine & if found to be faulty you will get the money back but tbh it does sound like he has just been unlucky & damaged them.
