Following the tragic and untimely (yet temporary) demise of RV3 due to suspected cam' failure....

....I was wondering about vehicles that we have owned, the cause of death and were the repaired or scrapped.
My MGF that I brought back from the brink....

..got rear ended not long after I sold it.
I sold my Fiat Coupe to someone who ignored a split radiator hose and snapped the engine a few miles later.
I sold my Lancia Beta to someone who couldn't weld and scrapped the car instead of paying to have a one inch plate welded to the sill.
My brothers Lotus Carlton died after he fiddled with the boost settings. The same thing happened to his Calibra 4x4 as well.
My Subaru Justy was writen off because the insurance company wouldn't replace a smashed window.
My brothers Land Rover Discovery died after the rear diff' decided to fail on a motorway.
I drove my Panda 4x4 (965cc) through a ford and was going well until I ran over a bottle got a puncture and the front of the car dropped enough to fill the engine with water. WD40 on the dizzy after a tow out and she was fine. Biancca sunroofs rule.
My next Panda was writen off by a Polish driver who forgot he needed to look right when you pull out of petrol stations.
Most recently my Rover got hit in the rear by a Saxo.

The Rover is now straight and was only off the road for an hour and a half. The Saxo wasn't as lucky.
So how have your vehicles died?
Did you fix them or were they beyond it?
All the best to Andy and rest of the Red Victor team and I'm sure I speak for us all when I wish RV3 get well soon.

My second car (1998ish) was an '89 Ford Escort. After I nearly killed it with HGF and a chewed up clutch, and a door held together with duct tape, it ran for another few years without ever having any kind of service, and did me proud for my time at university.
After my finals, I was ferrying carloads of accumulated crap back from Lancaster to Stoke, and not until the final journey did it splutter and die about a mile from home. Parents came and collected my things, and I arranged to have it towed to the nearest scrapyard.
RIP, F875 NNB

1500 MG Midget. Snapped a half shaft..
Through my cack handed drifting of the remaining part of the half shaft, from the diff, I did some minor damage to a pin in the diff that I didn't realise / notice.
About 1000 miles later, the diff let go, breaking two of the planet gears into four pieces each.
Replaced that too.
It was reliable though. In that it would reliably break something every 1000 miles or so during my ownership.
Wonder what became of it after I let it go.

Had a blowout in a Honda Accord on the M5 a couple of years back. Ended up with a cat B write off and several demolished crash barriers.
Could have been alot worse!
My BMW E30 was vandalised quite badly when paintstripper was thrown over it, along with about 10 other cars down my road. All the other cars went to the insurer, got written off and scrapped I presume. Got a new bonnet and the E30 is still here today

Hmmm, trying to think of even one of my cars that didn't end up in the scrap yard
First car was a Morris Ital. I'd had it for about 6 months after passing my test when I was given a company van. Gave the Ital to a mate for £50, who used it till it needed filling up with petrol then scrapped it.
The company van (A Ford Courier 1.8D) lasted another 6 months before the cam belt snapped while I attempted the world land speed record on a downhill stretch of the M62. The company didn't take to kindly to that and I lost my job over it

The Astramax is still the fastest vehicle in the world. Nice effort though.

Next up was a 1.3 Maestro. That met its fate in 18" of snow and ice. I didn't realise the hand brake had frozen on as I set off down the road - until 30 seconds later when I came to a bend and there was a bin waggon comming the other way.
After that came the little red Metro. The (soon to be) wife and I had decided to take a romantic walk round a local resevoir. Alas, seeing the car park entrance a little late combined with significant amounts of mud on the country lane ended up with us skidding uncontrolably toward the resevoir itself...
