Which makes more sense taking in deprecation , fuel, fun, practical, servicing etc etc
I've driven both and would be happy with either cars, both 4x4
Freelander out of warranty, kuga 2 years left

Freelander is the much better car, and the Kuga is based on the previous generation focus platform so will be more likely to be replaced soon.

I'd pick the Land Rover if prices are the same.

I would go with the Freelander 2. The reason why is because its a better off-roader, quieter , more luxurious etc etc etc...

The Ford Kuga, like the previous poster stated, it was based on the previous generation Focus which is still a good set-up but it may be replaced sometime soon.

Depends though, do you want a warranty and all the bobbins that go with a new car or do you want a slightly older but 'better' car.

IIRC the Freelander 2 was problematic when it was new. I may be wrong though.

The Ford every time. My Freelander blew a headgasket after 38k miles. Never again. That was after a number of buttons had fallen off the dash.

A FL2 blowing a head gasket?

Very unusual...

The work FL2 has a few problems with it and has had to be repaired more than any other car despite being 18 months old and having 46,000 miles on the clock. When I used it last week the fuel gauge wasn't working but that's the fewest faults it's had at any one time.

There are a lot of electrical things to go wrong on it though and I don't know if the Kuga would be any better. Excluding the wipers failing it's never actually had any problems that have stopped it being used.

If you need to go off road then freelander!

If you just want occasional 4x4 then the Kuga is a far better drive and will be more economical and is still in warranty !

If you want to use it offroad the Freelander will be in a different class; if you don't, the Kuga drives like a mildly ruined Focus, which is to say better than the Freelander.

So personally I'd buy the Freelander if you want to mud-plug, or a Focus if you don't.

It will be mainly for a 10 mile commute in and out bumpy (ish) country roads and then town/motorway driving
The roads can get pretty bad during the winter months, but i wont be offroading in it at all
but will need the knowledge of knowing i will be able to get into town.

I have a FL2, it's obviously not a car but it doesn't handle at all badly IMO.

I suppose something like a Quattro A3 might do the job you want better than either?

Any likelihood of off road - FL2
No likelihood of off road - Kuga.

Apparently, the Kuga is a very fine handling car on the road, and quite good fun.

FL2s are great motors. Kugas aren't.
