The Legacy needs a new exhaust system - and the OE one from Subaru is a frankly laughable 900 quid.
I can get a custom stainless full system for around 400-500 - which will not only save me a considerable wedge, but will hopefully make the flat 6 sound more like a flat 6 (the OE is very quiet)

However - what I absolutely do not want is a noisy intrusive boomy exhaust note at motorway speed.

It looks like the two options are Prospeed or Longlife. Does anyone have any opinions on either outfit.

I seem to believe that Prospeed is the better option - but on the downside they are in Cardiff which will mean a whole day of sitting around doing feck all while they fit it - and it's a long drive from Northampton - both for the fitting and if anything goes wrong with it in the future.

Longlife have a centre in Northampton which makes life a lot easier - but I have the general impression that that aren't as highly thought of.

Anyone got any thoughts or meaningful input into this decision?

There are only two options? Don't Milltek make an exhaust for the Legacy?

Slightly OT - this has never occured to me before. We all know what a Subaru flat gour sounds like. We also all know what a 911 sounds like.

Does a Legacy then, potentially, sound like a 911? Is there anything in the configuration to make it otherwise (ie different crank configuration or firing order or god knows what?

Few years back the missus took her car to a Longlife franchise in London. After they spent ages under the bonnet, not quite understanding it had a Astra GSi Turbo engine under the bonnet, they gave her a price to fit a decent mendrel bend exhaust system from the turbo back.

She arrives on the day of fitting and they try to start fitting pipe thats not mendrel bent, after pointing this out they fit the exhuast and it doesnt sit right. They then damaged her car getting it off the ramp.

They claimed the boss wasnt in, so she took pics of the damage and the exhaust and leaves. I then checked the welding and found it rather substandard. After chatting to someone at Longlife she went to a different Long life outlet and had it totally redone and not only is the weld work better, it sat perfect and gives a really excellent noise when she boots it (which is often smile)

Moral: We can recommend Longlife, but check the outlet before to go! the one we had issue with is no longer a Longlife outlet either.

Miltek only make one for the flat 4 turbo version - mine is a flat 6 NA.
Heyward and Scott make a lovely system - but its a lot out of my price range - Longlife and Prospeed seem to be the most viable options.

That's what I think - I'm not sure of the exact engine architecture but to my mind it should sound much more Porsche like than it currently does.

Had the Longlife system fitted yesterday - 450 quid inc VAT for a full system.
Certainly louder than the OE fitment but that's no bad thing.

Has a much nice Subaru burble now - the flat 6 sounds like it should. A little loud at low revs but that should die down once it 'soots up' a bit.

It seems to pull much more cleanly up to the redline now and the noise is lovely. Seems to be a little bit more lively - don't know if Im imagining that but it does feel like it has a little more 'go'.

Overall pretty pleased with it.
