Seeing as the idea of getting a decent 3 series for my budget have long gone, same with the A4 avant, im looking at the V50 Sport, 4-pot 2.0d. I'd like to get rid of my st220 after owning it for the last 7 months.

Look pretty nice with the sport wheels, i dont need massive amounts of room so the fact its at the smaller end of the estate market is fine.

Looking at something 5 year old max. Seen a beautiful one for a cracking price, 56k on the clock, but unsure about the colour (and also a bit annoyed about the towbar on the back, where the cut the bumper to install it). Would also prefer Xenons, but hey-ho, you cant have it all.

Just wondering about general opinions really, and any issues or nightmares anyone has heard of. I know the D5 would be a better choice but im trying for as much MPG as possibly without losing too much in terms of power. I know the 2.0d isnt a huge engine, but it should do.

I test drove one before settling with my 330d.

The one I drove was the R-Design trim, and in all honesty, in its own right it was a lovely car. It was comfortable, felt well built, well specced as standard, and IMO they look good too.

The D5 actually tends to be more economical in the real world than the 2.0d but are rare in manual form.

Main thing to bear in mind with the 2.0d is the 72k service usually needs a particulate filter change which is not cheap.

Does the dpf have to be changed? Or can you not just wait for it to break.

I don't think it *has* to be changed but it is the same type as PSA used which needs to be topped up with fluid. Eventually if/when it packs up the car will go into limp mode. They can be topped up but have a habit of failing soon afterwards anyway. The D5 uses a self re-generating type.

The 2.0d is the same engine used in some Fords and various Peugeot/Citroen cars.

Funny you mention that, i heard that the cambelt on those ford engines gets changed at 120k or 10 years! eek

You can get rid of the DPF issue - any decent remapper can map out the DPF functions of the ECU and a metal rod will knock the guts out of the DPF filter, you just need to take the filter off and beat the ceramic filter out.

I was quoted £400 for a remap, and de-FAP'ing a Focus.
