106GTi economy?
Discussion
Inspired by the "cars that give so much" thread and my need to pick up something economical to run to and from the office in (25 miles each way). Currently my ZT 190 is giving low to mid 20s. Am I being excessively optimistic thinking that a 106GTi will be much better? I loved my old GTi.

Interested in a ZTT 190 for a grand?

41 sounds good. Mid 30s would be ok in general.
How you drive and the roads you drive on will largely dictate what it will do. I once managed to get a 1.1 Rover 200 to average 27mpg. Which doesn't sound too bad until you realsie on the same roads a 1.8 would average 28mpg.
I've got 2 friends with Gti's and a friend with a VTS. They all say they are pants on fuel, still great cars though. I wouldn't expect anything more than an average of 30mpg.
I also do a 45mile round trip to work each day and I wouldn't even take these cars into consideration... It will cost pretty much £50 a week to get to work and back!

They are pretty good on fuel considering how quick they are. It's all due to lack of weight.
The last one I had was an 02 Saxo vts and on long high speed trips it averaged mid 30's.
Is mid 30's really good though?? My 5.7 V8 will do about 31mpg on long high speed trips while being a lot faster and more comfy. The last one I had was an 02 Saxo vts and on long high speed trips it averaged mid 30's.

I have a 106 GTi and I would either sell mine or take it to a garage if it didnt do over 30mpg. I also do a 45mile round trip to work each day and I wouldn't even take these cars into consideration... It will cost pretty much £50 a week to get to work and back!
Granted if you drove it on the limit all day every day but normal day to day driving with the odd hoon should return late 30's with carefull driving seeing low 40's.

Yeh Ill say my 30mpg quote was a stupid one. Granted if you drove it on the limit all day every day but normal day to day driving with the odd hoon should return late 30's with carefull driving seeing low 40's.
But as Steve said above his Clio Cup will return more mpg, which I truly believe. Which does put things in prespective when you look at the Clio has a lot more hp and weighs more. All I'm saying it, if your doing a large commute a 106Gti probably isn't the car for you.

I owned a 106 GTI for about 2 year and in that time covered 40,000 miles so I can tell you that on a very steady run along the motorway you can achieve 45mpg. I averaged 34mpg over the time I owned mine however. The most I ever got out of a tank was 395 miles but it was usually around 300 miles. If you drive it fairly carefully you will struggle to drop below 30mpg aslong as the car is running without any issues.
I've never heard anyone say for sure if the later models with the 3 plug ecu's were morre effeciant as on the Saxo VTR's it did made a difference. Mine was a single plug btw. Hope this helps.

A friend has owned a 172 and a VTS and said the 172 was better all round. But as Steve said above his Clio Cup will return more mpg, which I truly believe. Not sure what that 20mpg is, is it an EPA US gallon claim? Lowest I've clocked is 19mpg, all short journeys, some town and mostly a lot of right foot action.
30+mpg was fully loaded up to go camping on a mix of m-way and very tiny Devonish lanes, some single track.
Norm is 22-26mpg with mixed driving.

It's the figure quoted by Parkers http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/Detail.aspx?de...66comanche said:

ok. Not sure I'd believe Parkers, they have the weight wrong and massively wrong on the HP too.In 1997 the LT1 (previous model) was upped from 275 to 285bhp SAE Net. Autocar in 1998 claimed the LS1 car had 288bhp, this is the only place I've seen this claimed from. I think they took the 1997 figure which is imperial and converted it to metric DIN which would give about 288PS.
Parkers seem to have also taken the 1997 figure, but it would appear they've thought it was already metric PS so have done the calcs to make it make it imperial bhp giving the lower 283hp figure...

GM claimed 295bhp for Euro and 305bhp SAE Net for US cars in 1998, although both are proven to be made up figures by GM as these will make the same (or slightly higher) rwhp figures as a C5 Corvette which are rated by GM @ 345bhp SAE Net.

lets just say that on that trip where it did mid 30's your v8' you wouldnt have been able to keep up with me in your V8, between Grimsby and London, with lots of roundabouts along the way and lots of hard acceleration I was amazed it managed to do that much.
