First £100 Fill-Up

Unpleasant milestone – first time it has cost me over £100 to fill up.
Granted, it gives a range of 580 miles, which isn’t bad for a 2-tonne motor with 250bhp/400lb ft …..but it is still a heaving great amount of money.
Alas, I don’t suspect a full tank will ever cost much less again.

What amazes me is that in Jan09 when I bought my Z4 the first fill of super was 88p/litre. Now in June11 it's 139p/litre, a whopping 22% ish per year rise!
I'm surprised that the high costs haven't generated more economic problems. Logistic distribution costs must be aiding to inflation a great deal, and tourism will no doubt suffer this summer.
How the economy is meant to recover with taxation so high on fuel is beyond me, but hey ho.

Realistically, that's not much over general inflation, is it? Inflation seems to have been running at a good 10% per year, to me, whatever the government says. 
I usually fill up on or just under the quarter tank mark. The other week I let it run further down and for the first time it came up to over £70 for a tank of diesel.
Prices seem to be coming down slightly, my local shell was selling diesel at £1.419 a few weeks ago and now I think it's around £1.389 mark.

I think it's outrageous that the wife's 20 year old Nova, hardly a statement of excessive living (!) now costs over £50 to fill up. My cars really are getting to the point they carry more worth in their tanks than in their basic structure. 
Interesting point. The fuel in older cars will soon be worth more than the car itself!

One puzzling aspect is why people put 'super' fuel into cars that don't need it....only to then complain about the cost of fuel...???

Super is great value for money now, more than ever, as the 2p difference at Sainsburys is now almost half the premium it used to be!
137p or 139p, about 1.5% difference, but there is more benefit in mpg anyway, they pull smoother at partial throttle openings etc, and better additives for engine longevity too.
I wouldn't go paying for re-badged super at Shell and the like though, where you just pay 8p extra for a 'name' it seems.
Iirc, Sainsburys super is just un-branded BP super.
