Because the cameras will

"...bring greater benefits to drivers on this busy section of the M1 - helping to reduce congestion and make drivers' journeys safer and more reliable by smoothing traffic flows."

I should think closing the M1 will smooth out any traffic flow on it to the nth degree. Morons.

Yes, the cameras will smooth traffic flow by causing people to brake before every gantry. Cupid stunts!

I gave up using that section of the M1 ages ago. It is far more enjoyable these days to go cross country or just jump on the A1 instead. I thought i would start using again after they finished widening it but i guess not frown

The variable speeds may help.

I don't like them, but the stats of variable speeds on M25/M42 seem to point in the favour of them, and traffic does feel freer moving.

As long as they don't leave the cameras on when variable speed limit isn't set, I don't really mind.

I don't mind either so long as the cameras are not on when NSL applies.

The cameras are on when the limit is NSL - just set appropriately.

I'd have thought the extra lane was more advantageous than anything.

(But then again, people have to actually use it too).

You laugh but this is true, during recent M1 closures traffic around North Circular and Staples Corner was like a dream come true.

Even if it had 10 lanes there always will be twunts thinking that lane 9 is for cruising at 65mph and lane 10 for overtaking.

How do you know that? They are not on at NSL on the M25.

It really doesnt help ease congestion having the gantry cams and variable limits regardless of their stats. i should know as i spend enough time stuck in traffic caused by them and their cohorts.

30 mins delay to get to dartford toll oooooh really more like the best part of 2hrs twice in a week and so on and so forth.

Not convinced.
Mid morning the other week with lanes no-where near capacity M42 each gantry had 60 showing.
I thought peeps were joking here when theyd said watch out for the one gantry with 50 but yes there was! Ok a few people eased off slightly but when you could see the next gantry had 60 on it again was there any other purpose than to try to cause bunching or issue penalties?

Nor on the M42 I believe.
