Breaking: 2012 BMW 1 Series leaks onto Internet ahead of Frankfurt reveal

Oh dear. It appears that the overhauled 2012 BMW 1 Series has leaked onto the Internet ahead of its Frankfurt Motor Show debut, and while we only have images of it from a few angles, the new car's design has us scratching our heads. It's true that the 1 Series has never been a particularly gorgeous thing, but we're going to have to see this one in person to wrap our head around its upsized visage.
As is the way with such things, the 1 Series will grow in size compared to the car we currently enjoy, and a range of new four- and six-cylinder turbocharged engines should be seen underhood. BMW is expected to further its Efficient Dynamics program by fitting the new 1 with start/stop technology, as well as regenerative braking, though it isn't immediately clear what technologies will come on the 1 Series when it reaches the States.

I got over the 'challenging' looks of the current 1-series (which really only looks good with bodykit and big wheels) but there's no way I'll be getting on of the new ones - it's utterly horrendous.
I think BMW are actively trying to prevent people liking their designs.
Stupid place for the key too - any fob attached to it is going to rattle around while you drive. No more 1-series for me - BMW, you've just lost a 'target market customer'.

When I first saw these pics yesterday I thought "OMFG Noooooooooooooooo"
However, the more I look at those pics and the lines of the car i'm beginning to warm to it.
The cabin looks very tasty indeed.
I'll hold further judgment until I see a tarted up Mnonsense model and get a drive in one.
I honestly think this might be a winner for BMW, especially if they have the dynamics right. The current Msports are a cracking drive. I hope they have improved on this further.
The real bad think about this though is...... Now you know what the new 3 series might look like.

Going from the looks only;
When the last generation of BMW's came out (E60 5-series, Esomething 6-series and E90(?) 3-series etc etc) I hated the looks at first. That is a good thing, because with such an extreme emotion attached to the physical design it is very easy to morph itself into a love for that same design as time goes by. Now, I think the 5 and 6 series BM's look amazing, and even the 3 series is a pretty nice looking lump of metal. Overall, with the 3-series as a possible exception, I suspect that in 20-30 years time that generation of models will be looked upon as design classics.
This new generation, 5, 6 and this 1 don't inspire any emotion whatsoever. They are boring, and I am pretty sure that they will always be looked upon as such. There is no emotion to be stirred from them. The dashboard looks similar to the current Fiesta, except I would go out on a limb and say the Fiesta's cockpit is a tad more modern.
I wish I could like this but I really don't

IMO, BMW were at their best when doing sharp lines in their design. Withe the possible exception of the new shape Z4, which I think improves on the original, this new curvy front of this 1 series looks awful.
I was the exception in that I loved the 1 series coupe, and the hatchback too, provided it had the M-Sport pack on it, but IMO that shouldn't be compulsory to make the car look acceptable. ALL BMW's and Audi's etc now have the 'sport' kit on, hence them being the norm, therefore becoming very predictable and dull.
I also think the Bangle years will be looked as classics in 20 years time. As for this? Interior looks nice, reserve judgement for seeing it in the metal.

I think Vit4 has it spot on. Recent BMW design has been dismissed as the stylings of satan, when launched, but they do grow on you. Sooner or later you forget just how awful you thought it was, and go searching under the sofa to find a few grand so that you can get one on your drive.
IMO, the only exception to this has been the X-range.

My first reaction on opening the thread was "Ewww, it looks like a Pokemon with Downs Syndrome." However, after reading the rest of the replies and then going back for a second look it has already started growing on me. As others have said, most BMW designs of the last 6-7 years have taken some warming to, but they do get there eventually.
