I think I'm gonna buy a Honda Accord ....... automatic!

I've been looking for a new motor for a while now and after driving loads of cars I'm showing my age now and think I'm gonna go for an Accord.

I've got two little 'uns (5 & 3) and want a family bus for general knocking about and holidays etc.

My budget is £5k absolute tops and tbh for the money I can't fault the Accord, it's the estate I'm after and the boot is huge. Drove a 2.4 petrol one today with full heated leather, sat-nav, sunroof, great sound system, dual climate and loads more. Such a lot of motor for the money!

Or am I insane and in need of a good shake??

I used to really like the Accord, but I found the autobox intolerable at motorway cruising, it tended to hunt up and down and had to be manually locked into one gear.

Other than that, great car!

But the 2.4 petrol and auto box combo is going to be thirsty as hell.

Do you really want low 20s mpg from your family bus?

Jesus drove one according to St John's Gospel. He says, "For I did not speak of my own Accord." There is also another Bible quote, "The Apostles were in one Accord," so it's roomy as well. You can't get better endorsement than that.

After my V8 Audi anything is an improvement!

Didn't realise it was that bad....he reckoned he got around 400 miles out of a tank. The one thing it didn't have as it goes was a trip computer showing average MPG etc.

How do you find the autobox? What sort of MPG are you getting out of yours?

I like it, the tiptronic is good too, MPG is around 30/32 relaxed town driving, boot is huuuuuge, dog and mountain bike(rear seats down). I find it a good drive on the moterways.

Used to have the 2.4 Type-S manual, and it was great. Over 70k it never needed anything other than routine servicing, averaged 33mpg and the ride and handling were really good. Overall a sadly underrated car.

We are on our 3rd Accord and to be honest i cant think on anything else to replace the current one.
Yes they are not as desirable as bmw,audi etc but in imho they are very reliable easy to live with and not too bad to drive.
Havent had a tourer or auto but have had the past three shapes all in petrol.

Can't comment on the engine / auto but the vehicle itself is great. Our has just passed 100k and only tyres and a fuel filter in the last 3 yrs. Do it

Very similar story here- same car. I ran it from new to about 125,000 miles and the only thing that failed was the factory fit (Alpine) CD player.

Oh, and I was about 25 at the time.

I loved it apart from the mpg, I averaged around 28mpg which I thought wasn`t great considering the performance available.

It really was a good car, mine had the 17 inch wheels and it tramlined quite badly on Goodyear F1s but was a lot better on Continentals (ContiSportContact). I had a problem with a sticking rear brake, I had it rebuilt as a new unit was around £350 at the time. It was fine after that.

I also had a failure with the tailgate motor, it failed at just over 5 years old. Honda were very good, they supplied the motor and I paid for the labour for fitting which I thought was good for a car 2 years out of warranty. I`m sure the fact I had a full Honda history helped though.

The headlights misted up but these were dealt with by Honda on a service, again for no charge when it was out of warranty.

It was rattle-free when I sold it at 55,000 miles.

I`d have another without hesitation but either the 2.2 diesel or a 2.4 manual.

I have one, but it's the older grandad shape one with plastic woodgrain dash and everything. Mine is a 2.0 and I have no issues with the autobox on motorways at all. If I had to complain it seems to hang between gears on mild inclines, not really sure if it can manage a higher gear or not. I place some of the blame on the gutless engine though.

Fuel economy is the biggest disappointment though (yes, even more than the woodgrain). Despite my best efforts I cannot better 26-27 MPG with mixed driving and that is with *considerable* effort. My old 4 litre 2 tonne LS400 was returning 21MPG with the same commute/driving style. What size is the tank on the car you are looking at?. As soon as I hit 300 miles I start getting nervous and looking for a petrol station.

I console myself by thinking that at least it will be reliable and never be a target for thieves or vandals so I might as well keep it and run it into the ground. However, I fully intend to dropkick the Honda engineer that placed the exhaust flex pipe directly under the oil filter if we should ever come face to face.

I can still smell oil burning 2 weeks after the change.

My parents have an accord tourer with the 2.0 (manual) and its been brilliant for what it is. How come you're getting an auto though? i always think that one of hondas strong points is the gear shift...... my parents one feels lovely to change gear in.

I say go for it though.

I had a 2.4 auto saloon a while ago. It was a strange old beast - it really couldn't work out what sort of car it was trying to be, but it was curiously satisfying in that odd way that so many Hondas are.
