Need a good puller

We've four grand to play with, and are looking for something with good mpg and the ability to tow a fairly average caravan every once in a while.

So, before these what car? threads get banned, what are peoples suggestions?

Any ideas?

Define good MPG?

A 530d should pull anything (if they are available in budget).

Something like a Skoda Octavia or Superb if you're not bothered about the badge on the front?

I recall from a visit to the dentist that the Caravan Club magazine rates Skoda's offerings very highly for towing.

Get something rwd was very disappointed with Volvo t5 and Mondeo V6 and passat tdi have found rwd (BMW and omega) to be so much better for towing..

Caravan club may tell you octavia, experience tells me otherwise.

Then again you may be happy causing a mobile chicane every time you go on tour!

Don't they do a 4x4 flavour of Octavia?

IIRC torque and kerb weight are the pre-requisites (something about towing no more than 2/3rds the weight of the car?) - how about a Saab 9-5? Should pick up a good diesel within your budget.

There seems to be loads of 9-3s around at the moment which might be worth a look...
