Engine number?

i have a car that the engine number doesnt match my car.
i know the engine is legit as i supplied it awhile ago.
problem is i cant remember which car i took it out of.
the engine is smaller cc so should have reduced road tax.
problem is dvla want to know the original reg the engine came from.
is there anyway to find a cars reg from the engine number as dvla say they cant do it.

Try calling a main dealership of the manufacturer the engine came from?

OP, you haven't stuck a 2cv engine in a Defender have you?

OP I think the best bet is this:

1) Identify the model of car that would have had an engine of the type and displacement that is installed your new car

2) Check under the bonnet of all the cars you have that match the model identified in (1) above

3) The one with no engine in it is the one for which you need to give the number plate to the DVLA

lol i know the model etc but once i stripped the cars i scrap them
