So I went onto the Meerkats last week and got a decent qote on the XJS, went to pick it up on Saturday, gave the reference number which the insurance company had lost, so went through explaining everything again. Initial quote was £228 fully comp

I then get a quote for £728. confused The bloke tells me that I have to share the NCD between the existing car, the Polo diesel and the new car, and the new car has no NCD

I had no idea it worked like this, I thought your NCD was a discount for not making claims, your discount in effect.

So I went on line, got another quote, again nothing was said about other cars, apart from do you have access to another car and it came in at £268. Nothing on any of the policy details about other cars either.confused

So now when the new insurance company want to see proof of the NCD will they demand more money off me, or is it worth transferrring the NCD from the cheaper Polo to the Jag?

Never had this ste before, as the second car has always been on a classic policy, so had no idea this was the case.

Any recommendations? frownconfused

Its a farce, i know the reasoning behind it, but it doesn't make it any easier.

Basically you are the person driving, but the car is also the main risk, i.e. you can only drive one at once, so you assume the discount is for you, but its not, its a discount on a policy.

This is where it gets to me, if you have say 5 years NCD and you insure a car, thats fine, but if you get another car, its classed as brand new policy, so you have to class it as having 0 NCD for the purposes of the second policy.

Its madness as its not as if you became more dangerous, or a higher risk because you have 2 cars.

A fair few insurers will match or clone your existing NCD if you have a multicar policy, Flux i think do this for some customers, and Sky insurance (who i am with) did this for a mate as well.

The silly thing is, i have my bike policy which has 2 years NCD, but i also have a second bike policy that has 1 year ncd on it for a shared bike with my dad. Its madness, as it basically looks like i can be either 1 year or 2 years of NCD when in fact i have ridden bikes for over 10 years, i had a claim 2 years ago so lost my NCD.

Surely it should be you get the NCD on yourself, as in if you have no claims, any insurance policy you take out should reflect that, but there is money to be made, so doing that would be silly!

or put the XJS on a classic policy, I'm pretty sure it will qualify.

Insurance companies are getting worse all the time. I just renewed, 8 years ncb but on a different policy I have just had a claim, still unsettled. The gits announced that the possibility of a claim on another policy with a different company effectively means my 8 years ncb is ignored as they look at all risk not just my history with them. Result a jump of £300 :-(

NCD is no CLAIMS discount - it's suspended when an accident occurs (pending third-parties claiming against you) and reinstated only when blame is settled for that incident. The accident will obviously affect your premium whether a claim is made or not (whether fault or non-fault)...

I was once hit by another driver about 6 weeks from renewal time - the fact that the claim too ages to resolve meant that my renewal was quoted without my NCB and I had to pay-up. Once the claim was resolved, I was sent a refund (eventually) - sucks, but that's how it works...

Well I've just got a quick quote on the Polo with 0 NCB and it comes out at around £200 which is more or less what it is with full NCB. confused

So I may as well cancel the existing policy, transfer it to the Jag, and go onto a comparison site and possibly get it cheaper.

What a fking farce. frown

A pain in the arse and money lost for the insurance company pissing me about. confused

An other idea is to ignore price comparison websites, i use them for a rough guide, but when you want to insure, pick about 4-5 'decent' insurers, like Flux, MC edwards, basically buy a good car mag and pick some big names from the insurance ads at the back.

Spend a good hour on the phone going through the usual farce with them all, then pick your best price, i find i am usually about £40 cheaper doing this, and i have found they offer mirrored NCD and such, and one offered to insure my bike as well very reasonably, though i had just re-insured it.

Dont ask, dont get.

This is what I'll probably do soon. But what gets me is the lack of information on this, am I thick (don't answer that one wink) in not knowing that NCD is on the car and not with the person, as it was news to me and my mrs, and the fact it's not in any of the policy details from the insurance company.

Got very angry when he started asking me about the third car which had nothing to do with them and what difference it made to my quote. confused

Ignore the price comparison sites.

Call a good broker and explain your situation and usage. Ask for a "mirror" or "shadow" policy - this will recognise your NCD but not build up a separate NCD.

NCD isn't on a car OR a person OR a policy - it's a combination of the lot. Generally speaking you can only have NCD on one policy and claims made against the driver/car/policy will suspect or invalidate it.

Think of it more like a loyalty scheme really - you're rewarded for paying for a service you don't use...

This is solid advice IF you have complex insurance arrangements.

Price comparison sites (and major insurer callcentres) are designed to deal with 'simplest possible' scenarios - single car/driver or family policies for multiple cars.

Where you want to chop/change/pick/choose it's best to have someone who'll do a bit more work for you - but they'll take their cut so only do so if you need to.

Yup, though to be honest I have *always* found it cheaper via a broker than via any price comparison site.

My last policies were bought through Adrian Flux and or Saffron (small but good).

(As an example, mirror policy, 6k miles, 0 points/accidents on a group 19 car was £176 per annum, via AFlux)

Interesting, so ringing up Adrian flux on our shopping trolley, with 0 NCD but a mirror policy of our full NCD could be what we need. scratchchin

This is indeed the answer.

I have NCB matched across two policies, each from a different insurance company.

I hate to think what a claim would actually cost me...

There are often some other terms defined - eg, cannot be the primary car, main driver must be you, etc - but as long as you tell them all the facts, it's a good policy to hunt for.

I may look into a classic policy for the Jag, as the online one I got on Saturday will still be in the cooling-period, so would only have to pay for the 4/5 days or so.

A classic policy would probably come out cheaper than £280 too. Hopefully having one classic policy won't hinder having another one. rolleyes
