Fuel comsumption per hour!

As I seem to spend more of my time sitting in traffic and slow moving traffic, I wonder if we should be thinking of looking at fuel comsumption per hour rather than per mile?
Is there any way (without the need for a lab) to work out how much fuel a car engine uses per hour on idle?

I think I remember reading its somewhere around 1/2 liter per hour - but i'd imagine this depends massively on your engine, whether you're running aircon, and so on. The stop-start mechanisms on new cars seem to drop their fuel consumption a fair amount..

Surely no matter how long you sit there, your "MPG per hour" will always be zero

Anything under 5mph in my car shows at gallons/hour.

At idle, warm it is 0.3-0.4

It's been a while since I've seen it come on as I live in Rural Northumberland. I have been known to sit in gridlock for a whole 3 minutes at a time.

Does aircon actually make that much of a difference? Back of a cig pack calculations plus a couple of fuel runs on full tanks means it removes around 0.4-0.7 mpg.

I've got something on my dash that tells me how many miles I'm doing per hour, can't for the the life of me remember what it's called

I quite like the way my Clio tells me how much fuel I've used though, not had that before.

It takes me an hour to get to work.
I travel 40 miles on my journey to work.
I average around 40mpg.
I therefore calculate, by advanced mathematical calculations, that I consume 1 gallon per hour.

Simples. (We haven't heard that in a while.)

Depends what speed you're driving at, it can be more efficient than an open window

My Monaro (6.0 V8) has an instantaneous mpg reading that changes to gal / hr when idling.

It fluctuates a bit, between about 0.54, mostly around 0.62-0.67, sometimes up to 0.74.

Fluctuates between these sorts of values every second or so.

I can only hope other people do better than this...

yeah - aircon essentially uses fuel per hour, not fuel per mile (as the effort to run aircon is going to be broadly the same regardless of your speed). so lets say it takes out 2mpg (i've seen claims of 10%, no idea how accurate that is, I suspect it isn't) at 60mph. in a 30mpg car, you'd have used 2 gallons of fuel, or 2.14 gallons of fuel. therefore, 0.14 gallons per hour are used for aircon, or about half a litre, approximately increasing the amount of fuel needed compared to just idling by 50%.

maybe. my maths is rusty.

Every pump I use sells fuel in litres...
