quickest ring toy for a grand?

Just some whimsical thoughts. Got back from a weekend in the ring in my mx5. It was a lot of fun, but not very quick (as was to be expected). I was wondering what would be the quickest thing you could get for what the 5 was worth (I'm not shopping or anything, just thinking about what's available).

so, the car must

cost < £1000
be fully road legal (tax\mot)
be reliable enough to make it to the ring, round a few times, and home again
be quick round the ring

what can you suggest?

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, MG ZS 180. Some lovely ones for well under a grand at the moment.

Not sure i would touch anything with turbos at that budget for a ring toy.

If you are heading for the 'Ring in a £1000 car, then I'd be looking for the one that has the newest discs, pads, dampers and tyres ..... A good car on a worn out under carriage would be slower and less fun than a sh!t car on new boots and bushes.

Not a bad call.

I suspect - having owned a ZS180 and driven na MR2s - that the MR2 Turbo would be more fun condition-for-condition, but if £1k is the going rate for a half decent (barely ten year old) ZS180 I reckon it'd be a much safer bet over a tired ... well, a tired anything pretty much, MR2 Turbo included.

I think my weapon of choice would be something like a Celica ST185 GT4. My mate sold his two years ago for just under a grand and it was in decent nick with a years ticket. A lot of bang for your buck!
