I was mulling this over in the car last night. Which person do you think would have averaged the highest speed over their lifetime?

Could it be a sales rep, travelling at 80mph for, say, 3 hours a day or would it be an F1 or Indycar driver who travels at very high speed but relatively infrequently?

Can you think of any other people who spend a lot of their time at high speed?

I'm excluding pilots because they're not on land and are therefore cheating wink

Probably a test driver for sporty cars, or someone who does the taxi runs around the ring.

I would imagine train drivers doing the Channel tunnel or TGV in France might have a good bet on this.

surely either a pilot or an spaceman. Couple of years orbiting at 5 km/s has got to wind the average up? driving the lunar buggy are they technically on land?

As it's an average then it is surely a question of the fastest average then it's simply which one maintains the highest speeds. Duration being irrelevant.

Therefore, anyone riding on the Space Shuttle at 16000 MPH or so has to have a pretty darn high average speed......
