I wouldn't have thought that van was actually too badly overloaded - a Mazda 626 probably weighs about 1300kg, and that van looks like it might have a GVW of about 3500kg. Even if the van weighs 2000kg unladen that leaves a reasonable margin for driver and passenger. I suspect it had more to do with the security of the load and the high centre of gravity making the van look unstable.
The article says they'd bought the Mazda to take back home - I'd imagine the plan was to sell it. Simple robust cars are probably all the rage in Kazakhstan.

Sprinter max cargo is 1300kgs for that model IIRC(a bit lower in later ones). And it definitely feels like it when it has that much in there. A full tank of petrol, and one assumes a few suitcases in the boot, and it'll be straining. The article says they'd bought the Mazda to take back home - I'd imagine the plan was to sell it. Knickers!!! A 3500kg mgw Sprinter will easily cope with more than 1300kgs, it might not be legal on the road but it will handle it no problem. We used to shift stuff in an industrial base 1.7- 2 tonnes at a time with a 313 Sprinter and it handled it no problems. It was no race car but certainly didn't feel unsafe. Top effort for loading that!!
I'm always surprised how little weight you can carry even in quite large vans - given that you can put the best part of a tonne in the back of a lwb Defender, it came as a surprise when a friend showed me his nearly empty (but fully laden) Movano whilst bemoaning the fact it had the biggest payload of all the vans he'd looked at. Great for bulky light stuff, not so good if you sell heavy things made out of metal.
