The political situation was pretty good when we went there - for a few years after it got pretty bad. The Paris Dakar was cancelled due to issues in Mauritania with Al Queada threatening the racers. Bloody spoil sports.
If you do it then it is great fun but be careful and make sure that who ever you go with you get on with well and trust!! Make sure you know your car well too and have a basic tool kit that you can afford to leave behind with you!
Don't put your bank card behind a bar anywhere as one idiot did!

Thanks - lump hammer and a large roll of duct tape it is then (this should suffice as a toolkit, if I don't get on with my travelling companion and to avoid putting my card behind the bar. Looks like I'd better get cracking on finding a decent shed so I can get to know it.for some photos
