seeing as a few of you guys are dealers and a few others are fairly savvy,

what would be best way for me to attack the dealer with this 130 tomorrow? As far as i can tell its fairly well priced (parkers says 500 less with more miles) so i cant see them budging too much on price but due to the green movement and rising petrol prices im guessing there isnt TOO much demand for the larger engined 1 series - just the diesels.

Would i be best to accept the price and go in for free future service?/ upgrades?/new tyres? Or even push for better finance rates, Rather than banging on and fighting for maybe a £500 reduction in price....

Ive only ever bought from a dealer once before and got screwed!!

Put a holding deposit down or it will DEFINITELY be sold to someone else whilst you are on a test drive wink

Haggle what you can (I would think £500/£1k if you don't give the game away that you are buying regardless). It'll depend on their margin and how quickly they want shot of it.

Also, look at what they have large profit margins on. For example, when we bought the wife's car from a main dealer, we got a free service (as well as a nice discount on the car itself winkbiggrin). Cost to them for a service, about £50/£100, cost to a punter £300. You save £300, they only effectively discount by £50/£100.

Ultimately it comes down to how much you are prepared to pay for it, if they don't meet you then look elsewhere.

Also, I wouldn't read too much into Parkers prices. Are they retail or trade-in?

My poor effort to refer to a thread earlier where someone threw his toys clean out of his pram when that happened.

Bare in mind that in most main dealers sales and service are operated as seperate profit centres. You will often find that the sales dept pays more than the man in the street that can "get a deal" on the hourly rate.

Just haggle hard and be prepared to walk away, if the deal feels fair go for it.

TBH i edited my post quick time to remove anything that would give away said dealership! laugh

The car seemed priced fairly keenly but doesnt have all the options i want. i.e. Xenons.

Basic art of negotiation.....what is expensive to you and cheap to him.

i.e.

If you ask for £500 off the car that costs the dealer £500 because it's hard cash.

If you ask for free servicing that is say worth £500 to you it's not going to cost the dealer £500 because he obviously has margin on his service pricing...that's probably going to cost him £250.

That is a slight over simplification because the sales team is obviously a different revenue generator from the service department but that's up to the dealer to sort out. The service inclusive packages that you can get with new cars are something the dealers are forced to offer by BMW UK...they pay for them.

Also if you want a good deal you need to be prepared to walk away.....

If you go there, get excited and show you want it you won't get anything off of it.

In the same light, if it is the car you want, don't risk losing it for the sake of a £500 service if the car is well priced.

I paid top dollar for my TT, but it had every optional extra and was in the colour combo I wanted which was very rare. Within 2 hours of it going on ph I put a deposit on it. The dealer had 2 more customers call that day wanting to put a deposit on it.

So if you want it, get it!

both very good points to mull over, while i dont want to get over excited. I do want a 130 and this one isnt the exact spec i want, but they arent THAT common so we shall see i guess. Depends how much they want to sell it i think!
