Someone was hit by a car on a pedestrian crossing. Hope they’re OK / on the mend and hopefully it was not fatal. - Taken to Royal National Hospital (London - Whitechapel)

Were they seriously injured by the car? It looks to me like a bit of 'let's take the chopper...it's been a while' syndrome. Surely they are for rescues/emergencies where normal cars/vans can't access?

From what I know a car had hit a person at the crossing, so I think it was a life or death situ.

A BMW Mini was the car involved.

They're also there in the case of major trauma, as they have a doctor on board and paramedics who can do more in the way of interventions, for example surgical airways and chest drains. Also, they are able to get the patient to a major trauma centre (only 4 in london) much faster than a conventional road vehicle could, bearing in mind that for most trauma there's the possibility of spinal injury so the driving's generally slower.

Because plenty of people will donate to the Air Ambulances, myself included, but the Police choppers, far less so.



This, by the way, barring any lasting damage to anyone involved is fking awesome!
