Broken Porsche dilemma

My 928 decided to die about 10 miles from home, on the M40, on the way back from Le Mans. It started overheating at high speed and now makes a noise like a washing machine full of spanners. So my dilemma is - get it fixed or sell it on as is? I think, given the symptoms, it's either a bearing deep within the bowels of the engine or the water pump. Either of these is going to be well over a grand to sort out - possibly a lot more if it's not the pump. By the time I've had it transported and paid a specialist to diagnose it's going to be a few hundred quid before I even start paying for the fix I think.

It ran well after I finally finished tracking electrical niggles but it needs some paint to be mint and a few other little jobs like the clutch adjusting. I have no idea what to do really, I'm leaning towards sell it because I'm sick of it being a money pit but I do like driving it... What are peoples thoughts? I don't really know what the value of a knackered one is (or a good one for that matter). It's an S2 manual.

Sounds like water pump.

Is there no chance of tackling the job yourself?

You could always get as far as you are comfortable with then have a pro do the rest. Should cut out a fair chunk of labour.

Selling it with an overheating history would limit the price and market a lot.

The heads may need skimming if you ran it a long time hot of course.

Repair it yourself. Have a go, your car will not get much in a sale in its present condition.

I'm reasonably happy fixing minor things on my own cars but isn't the water pump (+cambelt) a major undertaking on a 928? Special tools required etc?
