Insurance renewal ripoff!
Discussion
So, its insurance renewal time for me. Last year's quote was £450, this year I've made it to 4 years NCB, dad's speeding fine will have expired (dad has always been insured on my cars, just in case), so ideally I should be getting mega cheap quotes. Got an email from my insurance co. today (its a purple one with a wrinkly rock star) and their quote, fully comp, for a 21 year old, with 4 years NCB, on a 1.2 Fiat Panda which is probably worth about 20p, was £410.
I have heard on here a few times that insurers often charge less to new customers than renewal quotes, so I went onto moneysupermarket and put in all the details, identical to the ones supplied to the wrinkly rocker, put in dad's details. My new quote? £299. From the same f
king insurer! And of course they have no phone number for me to go and complain. Why are insurance companies getting away with this?

Renewal received yesterday - £1100!
Quote on their website £810.
Best price on internet £533.
And their renewal letter started with 'Thank you very much for insuring your car with us for the last 4 years'. - But you clearly don't want me to hang around for the fifth.

Ring the rockstar marketed company up. Tell them what you've found. Most of the time companies will match it. If not then find a cheaper deal.
I do this every year - my insurance is around £400 but would go up around £100 a year if I let it. Internet/Introductory bonuses can appy every year if you move around or threaten to leave. Luckily my nautical themed company have a couple of sister companies with almost identical prices and you can jump from one to the other every year if they don't match.

Yeah, it is quite cheap considering I'm a 21 year old student, so in their eyes I'm obviously a boy racer despite 4 years NCB and the 1.2 Panda. Luckily I'm still at the stage where the cost is slowly decreasing as I build up NCB, I daresay when I hit 25 it'll start climbing!
I would ring up our rockstar marketed friends, but they insist on doing everything online as its quicker blah blah blah, and as such, there is no phone number. I'm guessing they can't really do much if I cancel the policy then return as a new customer?

I had a similar case last december.Got my renewal through and it had gone from £710 to £930!! without any claims, points etc...
I rang around and got a quote from another broker for £580 and guess what,it was with the same insurance company as my renewal!!
I asked them what the f
k is going on and they told me it is all to do with the deals and discounts the brokers have going with the insurance companies at a given time.

The only smash I ever had was 3 years ago, just a couple of dented panels, nothing major. How do these idiots get hold of my number?

The "you may be entitled to claim £3750 for your accident is a random thing, I've had that text on the works mobile.DanB7290 said:

Occasionally it happens. Even though our prices are among the lowest on the market, sometimes you'll find a cheaper one. It may cost a little less, but does it give you a lot less? Check exactly what's covered and the excess you'll have to pay.
If you've been quoted a lower price from another insurer and wanted to talk to us about your renewal quote, you'll find our contact details in your renewal e-mail.
We're confident we always offer you a fantastic choice of cover at the right price. It would be great if you choose us to insure your car for the first time, but we can't offer to match another quote right now.
ETA: They say they won't price match a competitor, but they may price match themselves. If you've been quoted a lower price from another insurer and wanted to talk to us about your renewal quote, you'll find our contact details in your renewal e-mail.

Why do you think you should be getting mega cheap quotes - you are still ni a very high risk group - you can do just as much damage with a Panda as you can with something bigger.I have heard on here a few times that insurers often charge less to new customers than renewal quotes, so I went onto moneysupermarket and put in all the details, identical to the ones supplied to the wrinkly rocker, put in dad's details. Why are insurance companies getting away with this?Note also tat your renewal is CHEAPER in a market that has gone up hugely - most people are seeing their renewals go up because of all the cheats, scammers, people who cant drive in snow, "my neck hurts" brigade, and the people who insist on a 911 whilst their Nova is repaired..
As others have said, insurers are greedy and will never be competitive come renewal - I don't think I have ever gone 2 years with an insurer...
Will be emailing them to discuss tomorrow, hopefully I'll get a positive outcome!
edo: I understand that most people are having higher and higher renewal quotes, and should be thankful that mine is slightly lower than last year, and whilst I am still "high risk", I just don't see why the insurance people should charge me £110 more for the year because I'm a loyal customer rather than a new one. Yes, £410 a year at my age is pretty good, but why should I pay this when the same company would give me the same cover for £299 if I was a new customer? Not a rant per se, just a bit miffed as to how they can get away with that?
