In fact, not only it is a 5 star car, it is one of only 5 cars Richard Meaden described as perfect. Alone with, if memory serves, some model of Caterham, 306 GTi-6, some of model of 911, and... I've forgotten the 5th.

Well, just consulted the EVO mag book 'Performance Heros' and the cheapest 5 star car in the £0 - £5k bracket is the MX5 Mk1, or Clio Williams, or Jag XJR, or Puma or Clio 172........ So quite a few to choose from!

The other cars in that price bracket are the Impreza RB5, Integ Type R, MR2, Mini Cooper, E30 325i, E36 M3, and 944 S2.

FWIW having driven a mk2 MX5 and a facelift Puma extensively, I'd have the Puma ina heartbeat over the MX5. The MX5 has a really coarse engine that doesn't do anything unless you thrash the hell out of it, but it is not a nice engine to thrash the hell out of and always feels like it would rather you grew up a bit.
