windscreen aireal- useless?

my van (vito mk2) has a FM antenna element running along the top of the windshield, and pretty dire reception- are these generally substandard and best replaced with a proper antenna, or should I be looking for a bad connection? I listen mostly to LBC, so probably not as good a signal as Radio1 etc.
Fitted hundreds of these windscreens and can't say I remember anyone complaining that the integral aerial or as Porsche like to call it, 'radio diversity' is a bad idea.
Like Porsche, the VAG versions have the aerial sandwiched in between the two layers of glass but on the Vito, the aerial is 'applied' to the inside of the glass - it's quite possible that you may have a break in the antenna.
Other than that, check the module.
