6th Gear Driving Experiences...
Discussion
Hi all,
I am wanting to book a memorable driving experience for my husband's 30th next month. The two options are either the Supreme Supercar Experience with 6th Gear or the Silverstone Challenge. Obviously, the range and type of cars are different and I am sure that he would prefer the supercars but at Silverstone!
I'm not sure what to do. If I were to go for the Supreme Supercar Experience, I want to be certain that he will be allowed take the cars round a decent track allowing the speed.
Does anyone have any advice regarding which track location to book at? I have heard that some tracks allow more speed than others. I believe the options are either, Elvington York, Prodrive Kenilworth or Longcross Surrey for this particular 6th Gear Experience.
I'm really stuck so any help would be gratefully received. Thanks all
FYI - the links for the above experiences:

My girlfriend bought me a 6th Gear Experience and I chose Elvington. The car I chose was a V8V and you got around 4 laps of quite a sizeable track with a massive straight. Word was several people were told to back off when they were approaching 100 or so on the straights, but the bloke I was with didn't seem to mind. If you spin they do end the drive straight away though.
All in all I really enjoyed the day, it wasn't completely balls to the wall and the drive probably lasted 10-15 minutes max but I would definitely go again. I think next time I'll get a package so I can experience a few cars instead of just the one! A group of lads on stag do had a drive in all the cars available but I think it was quite pricey.
Hope this helps!

As above, bear in mind the short duration of many of the experiences, and also rev limits and nannying instructors which mean you may not drive much faster than you would in your ordinary everyday car. I'm not knocking driving experiences, but do bear that in mind. Also bear in mind the circuit you'll be on - there's nothing quite like driving a proper circuit like Donington or Silverstone, but many Silverstone driving experiences for instance don't take place on the actual GP circuit (some use the Southern part of it, but some not at all). Airfields are, obviously, just airfields.
For comparison, I got my ex a gliding trip for Christmas once, and that was only about £50 I think, for an hour in the air when she also got to fly the thing for a short period - it makes driving experiences seem quite poor value for money. Even sailing is better value - with another ex we went on a racing Catermaran for two hours for £35 each, and if bigger boats are more your thing I got my Dad an entire day on a pukka biig carbon fibre ocean racing yacht for about £175 for his birthday - 7 hours! Hell, you can jump out of a plane for £300 (parachute included!), which is probably more memorable than sticking to 5k revs in a Ferrari for 10 minutes? Or maybe racing has just spoilt me?
For driving though, personally I'd recommend either Mercedes Benz World or Porsche World. The reason is that they're trying to sell cars and promote themselves, so everything's subsidised and better value. Mithril Racing at Goodwood are reasonable too, and you could always book a flying experience as well for afterwards to make him feel really spoilt

I did a 6th gear driving experience at the Prodrive track near Kenilworth for my 21st. Drove the 360 and Atom. In the 360 I could go flat out on the straights but he wouldn't let me really push it in the bends, but all credit to the guy who was with me in the Atom, he let me push it as hard as I liked which was a great experience. Passenger lap in the CSL was a good laugh to. Although the time in the cars goes far too quickly, I'd definitely recommend it.
I was bought a 6th Gear experience for my 40th and arranged the drive for last Friday. I chose Longcross. It's an interesting circuit, although the middle twisty bit has a 40mph limit! My instructor seemed happy enough for me to keep my toe in, though.
Certainly you only get to push the cars to probably 6/10th of their abilities (other than full beans on the straight), but still an experience I won't forget.
Plenty of chances to spend A LOT of money on the day. £25 for the insurance.....£35 for a memory stick to record your driving in car and out, plus £35 for half a dozen photos, all optional though.
Aston DBS for me

A friend of mine got one as a Xmas present from his sister Xmas 2009, but was not feeling well, and by March was diagnosed with stomach cancer.
He rang and told them about his health and the treatment he was recieving and there was no way he could do it within the 6 month time limit. He asked if they were prepared to extend this period.
They said no, He just went along with it. 18 months later he is only just back to work.
I wouldnt do business with a company like that.

I did a 3 car driving experience with 6th gear in March. Gallardo, Ferrari 360 and the Atom.
It was a great half day out and I would highly recommend it.
Although, looking at the silverstone link, if I was spending that sort of money, I would choose to go there. It looks like you get a lot more driving for your £ and on a proper race track too.
ETA My drive was at Kenilworth, You can get some speed out of the cars, but not drive them to the limit.
The instructors are very good and will encourage you all the way.

If it's the cars themselves he is more interested in then go for a supercar day. If it's having a lot of fun in a car he's after, try http://experience.caterham.co.uk/
If your looking at spending £7-800 seariously consider http://www.palmersport.com/. Haven't done it myself but have hear excellent things from those who have - essentially plenty of drive time and instructors continually pushing you to go harder. It's geared up for corporate groups but give them a call and they'll provide a price for a single person to attend.
My other half got me 4 laps in Murci through Drivers Dream Days.
On the day prior to the 4 laps i got taken on a off road experience and then a teaching lap of the track in a Scubby. Then onto the 4 laps. The instructor kept telling me to floor it through the corners and said on the final lap to go out onto the main straight and floor it got up to 160mph before having to slow for tge corner.
After the 4 laps we then went on a high speed lap in the Scubby again.
It was a great day out and well priced too as the extra bits where included in the price of the 4 laps.

No question about it. If he's a real car enthusiast he'll get 100x more fun out of this:

The supercar experiences are just a novelty, and a complete rip off. If he's there to enjoy the driving (rather than boast in the office the next day) get a him a FULL DAY of driving, not just 15 mins, and for no more money, or far less if it's just an evening (which is still a good 3+ hours).

As previously mentioned Ph'er Simon Spider is a co-owner of 6th Gear and I know he would be appalled by this story. They are down at Longcross tommorow so I'll let him know.He rang and told them about his health and the treatment he was recieving and there was no way he could do it within the 6 month time limit.
