Having a bit of a clear out of the garage recently included binning a couple of oil cans (Cheap brand 10/40) that were stashed in a corner of crap - probably 5-8 years old I noticed the price tag £14.99.

I just happen to be in the same factors this weekend, looking at oil and noticed same brand, same oil - £16.99

So that's £13% over 5 years or so - yet fuel five or six years ago averaged 80-90p per litre and now are some 130-140p per litre! a whopping 60% increase! (rounded numbers but you get the picture)

Why hasn't the price of oils and lubricants shot through the roof too???

I'd imagine not having fuel tax and fuel tax-tax applied to it would help

I glanced at the shelves in a Shell fuel station the other day and noticed that they charge around £15-20 for just one litre of oil eek. Talk about taking advantage!

I work in the motor trade and I'm now paying almost double the price for oil compared with 6-7 years ago but we are typically using better grades and qualities of oil now which presumable accounts for a fair chunk of the increase.

As Ian said though, tax is a major component in fuel costs.

Not being funny but what does the price of oil have to do with anything? I very much doubt any of us are using mineral oil. The clue is in the name, synthetic.

The definition of synthetic oil is appropriately slippery. AFAIK some synthetic oils are at least partly mineral in origin, and are refined to be "synthetic ".

Yeah. Even some "fully synthetic" oils are in fact mineral-based, and it's bloody hard to tell which is which from looking at the bottles.

FWIW, the price of petrol wasn't 80-90p five or six years ago, I have records from when I started driving that say 22nd March 2009, 88.9p/l.

That was a lot, too. Ouch.
