996 Turbo vs M6. Hmmm, a lovely choice to make.

Having almost bought a Cayenne Turbo last week, I've now decided to keep the Subaru Outback as the family runaround and get either a 996 Turbo or a BMW M6.
Gone for these two as need some semblance of space in the back for a baby seat, and a little room for a buggy. Used to have a Boxster S and love the Porsche brand, but really being swayed now by the sheer value of the M6.
Just wondered what PH would go for.

996 a better looking car? Hmmmm that all depends. For me the 996 hasn`t aged as well as other 911 because of the headlights.
I was looking at both these cars and settled on the m6, it`s farrr more comfortable, quicker, mine has been 100% reliable to boot. IMO the bangle designed M6 is aging very gracefully and yes you`re right, it`s representing preposterous value for money at the moment. Mine hasn`t even been that ruinous to run, apart from fuelling the beast. Just general servicing items that I get OEM online and take them to BMW to fit as per warranty terms. They may not like it but we all like saving a few bob. I even got 20,000 ish out of a set of rears (PS2s)
CAVEAT EMPTOR: Buy right.......buy from BMW and try and find out when/if they are doing the 1 year extension on the AUC warranty. Very reassuring to have 2 years on a used purchase where IF something does go wrong you know you are covered.

The M6 is by far the better car, although for top level sc'nthorpery the über Hög remains broadly indomitable.
If you ever intend to resell either, get the 911 since the former is effectively unsellable, like 99% of petrol engined cars {unless your idea of acceptable sell through is to incur a rogering akin to that suffered by the poor soul at the start of literary masterpiece, 'Kane and Abel.'}

Out of those two I'd get the 996 every time. It's the only one I'd remotely consider as a weekend toy. I'm sure it'd make a great daily driver, but the M6 is just too big and sensible to save purely for high days and holidays.
Have you thought about going for something a bit more focused? You could get a great Exige with change, a really well specced Caterham R500 or just about any TVR ever produced... Each to their own, but personally if I was only going to wheel it out at weekends (with something sensible and practical for the week) I'd want a more concentrated hit of adrenaline.

The Caterham's crossed my mind a few times. In fact, was watching a few at Brands Hatch yesterday. Lovely little things. Seems the 996 is looking more enticing, and certainly prefer the size of the thing. Always like smaller cars.Have you thought about going for something a bit more focused? I think the 996 is starting to look a bit dated on the inside, but still an awesome bit of kit.
I don't think you would feel short changed with either to be honest. For the money, the M6 will be the newer, even main dealer warranted car.
I guess the 996 might use slight less fuel?
