Where to meet someone to view a car?

Finally! After a week or so of trying someone finally wants to come and view my car!

Only issue is my mum doesn't want people coming to the house which I guess is fair enough, so where would the best place to meet someone to view the car?

I was thinking a car park of some description, but I am really not sure.

I have never sold a car privately before, so any advice would be much appreciated!

I thought it may come across like that, but do you kind of see where my mum is coming from?

That is probably a good idea, depends where they are from though!

Would think you were dodgy if you were wanting to meet in a car park. Tell your mum to get a grip. The person coming over is wanting to look at/ buy your car not case the joint.

Tell her to be out if she's worried. Never, ever buy a car from a bloke down the pub or a random carpark. I ask to see driving licence to check it matches the V5...

What about asking them to meet you at your house, but then going to finalise paperwork in a local Cafe or Bar? This way, the visitor doesnt have to go into your Mum's house.

I think she is just a bit funny about having random people to the house. May have to try and talk her into it tomorrow!

I understand what you are all saying, I would be a bit unsure about buying a car from someone in a car park too, but I do see my Mum's point of view.

Your Mum is being daft.

They wont come in the house unless you invite them in. They are there to see the car, not to be shown around. Why not park it in the street and then they wont even come on the drive?

I'm about to sell the OH's GTi shortly and I'm not too keen on strangers coming round - just worry about if they run it for a month and then something breaks they will then pester us incessantly to repair it for them. There's nothing wrong with the motor - but what if something goes and they think it's our fault. Never sold a motor privately either - but I suppose our address is on the V5 anyway.

If you are worried about that, then make doubly sure that you write a receipt (I'm sure you would anyway, but just to re-iterate) Making sure that it includes the caveat 'Vehicle Sold as Seen with no warranty given or implied', and make sure you sign it and they sign it, including the date, and make two copies.

Although being a private sale they have no come-back, unless deliberately mislead, it pays to go 'belt and braces'

Thanks for that - you actually reminded me that we bought a VW named component warranty for it back in March - never needed it but I'm sure it's transferable onto any new owner. So that should give them/us a little peace of mind.

I too would never buy a car from a random car park, I can, sort of, however understand your Mums concerns.

I sold a motorbike recently, and one prospective buyer rang up, got my address then that's the last I heard of him. I was paranoid he'd be round to help himself when we were out. Fortunately that didn't happen, but it did make me more aware and I am now much slower to give my address out, and will only do so once I'm sure they're genuine.

If in doubt now, I will arrange to meet them at my local Tesco then lead them back to my place (giving the explanation my house is difficuly to find as a cover for this). Perhaps you could do something similar?

Or maybe your Mum is just a crazy cat lady?

Has your mum never bought or sold a car FFS? I too would find it very dodgy if I couldn't go to someones house, look at the car, and then pop inside to check over the paperwork with a cup of tea or something. It's the norm!!
