Any indication of how long it should take a dealer to arrange the transfer of a registration number from a trade-in on to a new car?

Depending on the DVLA's workload at the time, anything from about a week and a half up to 4 weeks to have everything completed.

To be able to drive away on the plates with your new tax disc and MOT, not even a week, I would say. The V5 tends to follow rather more slowly, it took just under two weeks for me, but as said if they're busy it's gonna be longer.

We always work on 'at least' 10 working days. As the poster said above it depends on the DVLA work-load; it'll also depend on wether the dealer is happy to take your car in p/x before you get the V5 back, as they won't be able to do anything with it until then.
