You have up to 10k to spend. You will sell the car after 5 years. No stipulations. Your aim is to simply claw as much as the budget back at the time of sale.

Hmm, not taking running costs into account makes the whole question rather arbitrary and I suspect means that the answer is to buy something old and fairly rare. There are probably plenty of things in that price range that will appreciate over the next five years, but you'll end up spending 2k a year keeping them going.

Just replied to this on another thread. A decent Caterham is pretty much depreciation proof. And you can even drive it a bit during the 5 years with little value impact.

I know that you can buy a k-series 7 for around £10, so find me a nice k-series for less than £9k and prove me wrong.

I was thinking Caterham would be pretty bullet proof. What about an S1 Elise?

I would look for a really clean, modest mileage Mercedes 560 SEC with no rust. I think they're only heading north although the best time to buy was probably a year or 18 months ago.

Lovely old thing but potentially a massive moneypit if not checked over thoroughly, we bought a Fiat 500 and doing all the work myself it still looks ropey and has cost £1500 in parts due to unseen rust (had an MOT, how I dont know and you cant really stab someones P and J with a screwdriver), plus an engine rebuild as it dropped a valve a couple of weeks ago, £200 for bits for me to do it versus £1300 for a recon. So, only approach if you know what you are doing or have someone who does.

But, on principle not a bad place to put some cash, also, check prices, may be a tad over-price for a 72.
