Fast estate for 3k?

Hi i'm looking to get a quick estate car for 2500-3000 I dont want anything older than an 04 and it can't more than 2.2ltr due to insurance pref diesel so its still practical on fuel.
I was thinking Passat, Honda Accord or something like that? I'm either going to auctions or buying private and I have £3000 to spend maybe stretch a bit more.
Can anyone please help me out I have been looking at whatcar? and older topgear reveiws but none of them online seem to tell you if they are fast or the 0-60. I'm thinking BMW & Merc are not ideal as they arent the cheapest for parts and services ect.

At £3k a Mercedes E430 or BMW 540i needn't be a moneypit, I dare say that as long as you avoid rust on the Mercs then they will be very good to you and indy prices aren't bad at all for taking good care of them. Failing that, the obvious answer would be a Volvo V70 T5, cracking sleepers those are.

A fast, cheap, not particularly old, sub 2.2 litre diesel estate car that's also cheap to maintain and I'm guessing be reliable too?

I think you may be SOL on that score, subject to your definitions of "fast" I guess.

I think saying no more than 2.2 for insurance is a bit wrong as well. Plenty of people get better quotes on 2.9 Volvos than 1.6 hatchbacks!

Legacy GTB or Impreza Wagon might be worth a look. Octavia vRS if you want to go newer.
