Alternative traffic light design - a bit of fun

What do you think the results would be?

Personally I think it would encourage trying to speed up to a green light which is about to go back to amber because you'd see how much time you had to "beat" the light.

Personally I would like all lights to be replaced with the clock from Countdown.

Systems like the ones we have are set up for the small percentage of incompetent drivers who need as little information about the traffic situation and cannot think for themselves.

This is the reason the traffic lights are simple.

Any more information and the system would collapse..

The traffic lights in Bulgaria have timers on them, so you can see exactly how long you have to wait. I find it is a little safer, as you don;t have to guess and boot it 'just in case'. You can see you have 10 seconds left, so can continue at the speed you are going, or if it is 3 seconds, you know you won;t make it, so prepare to stop far earlier, and so on.

Can someone kindly tell me why the timing from green to orange to red isn't adjusted according to the speed limit in the given area i.e the higher the speed limit, the longer the light stays on orange for. This would potentially give you a much greater braking distance.
