I was filling up yesterday and in the car next to me a guy sparked up. We were right in the centre of the forecourt. He was waiting for his mate/missus/monkey.
I know this country is full of pointless h+s rules but seriously how fking stupid.
That is all.

Not sure using a rifle nearby would be ideal either scratchchin.

Assuming you aren't posting from the afterlife could you tell me what the problem is?

Baring in mind that the guy was smoking inside a car or as i prefer to call them big wheeled ignition sources full of hot stuff and high voltage sparks.

Good point. The biggest source of ignition on a forecourt would be the nice sparks when the starter motor starts engaging.

I recall some years ago in the Highlands, when the petrol station attendent (Just a one man band), would FILL the car for you, this old guy came out, pipe in mouth puffing away, and proceeded to fill my car for me.

Mythbusters did this. If a petrol take ruptures and you throw a lit cig into the pool of petrol it will extinguish.

Sounds like the old guy who used to have a garage near us, he'd stand on the door of the shop all day smoking and watching customers suspiciously while letting someone else work the till...
The garage is closed now...its an Iraqi car wash smile

Smokers have a habit of throwing their cancer sticks out of the window, given the right circumstances, could be quite messy, a petrol leak etc.

Why cant they just abide by the rules, and don't use the mobiles either, OK someone is about to ask me why, I dont fking know why, but the stickers at petrol stations say don't do it.

But let me see, what if we amend the sign :-

1. You can smoke in you car if the windows are up.
2. You can't open the door if you are smoking.
3. You can only use safety matches to ignite your cancer stick, not lighters.
4. Your car must be 10 ft from the petrol pump before you can smoke.
5. If...........

And if we made up enough instructions, by the time they had finished reading them, the driver would be back in the car, and away biggrin

I can only say most things these days are down to "Risk Assessment", you have to reduce the risk as low as practicable.

That's right - I learned something from that too. However, the risk is with the naked flame i.e. sparking up.

Whilst I don't condone what he did, and wouldn't do it myself - have you ever had a wander around the paddock of a race circuit?

One could be mistaken for thinking that it's illegal to fuel without at least one ciggie/cigar hanging out your mouth...and to be honest, I've never seen or heard of a car going up in flames due to it.

Cheers

Risk is with the fumes and a naked flame.
Anyway the french and germans have ashtrays at petrol stations yards from the pumps.

C'mon, the lighter will ignite the petrol fumes in the forecourt and it will all go bang will it? OP, you're just worrying about nothing. Grow a pair, and if it bothered you that much tell the guy to put his cig out. Even if he's powerfully built he's not going to box your head in infront of CCTV and 10 other people in the fuel station...

Long range, no risk. I've thought this through.

Do you do everything you're told by stickers, signs, notices, people in hi-viz jackets?
