Air - not free

Shell have put the price of air up from 20p to 50p for 5mins. Most motorists don't have, or aren't prepared to pay for compressor equipment to have sat around the house (aswell as the price of calibrating it every so often) so are they able to just keep putting the price up? Should the govt not get involved when this starts to discourage people to take a safe approach to motoring?

There are way to add air to tyres without having a compressor.

Boot sales and car shows are brilliant for this. There was a stand at the VBOA Rally last year knocking out Airman electric pump with a gauge and light, and a separate digital gauge for a fiver. I got two. Also at an auto jumble I got a stick type tyre pressure gauge, that had even been calibrated within 5 years, for a pound.

CPC (Farnell company) knock out, admittedly not very nice, pumps for about £7. I keep one in the boot of two of the most used cars for emergencies.

How about go to the shop and buy a pump if you won't pay 50p for air.. Why should they install and maintain an air compressor for random public to abuse?

Double-barrelled footpump with guage. More stable than the single-barrel version and takes me about 10 mins to check & pump up tyres on two cars, as well as topping up screenwash and checking fluids. All done at a time to suit me, on a cold engine & tyres so all fluids & pressures have settled.

No more fighting with the stretchy hose across the bonnet or waiting for someone who's nipped in for some milk & cigarettes leaving their car in the crucial space!

Footpump every time. I don't like to use a garage as by the time I'm there there might be a little heat in the tyres no matter how steady I drive and it will give me the wrong pressure. That's probably from bikes though where the pressure is crucial.

My ten quid Halfords footpump with integral gauge has done the job fine for the last ten years.

Why on earth should a garage provide it for free? They aren't a road safety charity.

seeing as shell lease the equipment and don't have control over how much is charged why should the govt get involved?

Hillarious. The lack of free tyres and brakes also discourages people from safe motoring. Why aren't THEY doing something about it?

Im not sure that this blatant profiteering racket has reached the radars of those in power. You sir, you need to act and act now. Write to Cameron, write to the Queen if you must and make them aware of the turmoil us motorists are experiencing at the hand of those pressurised air purveyors.

You're not paying for the air, you're paying for use of the machinery, power and calibrated instruments. Free airlines do not need to be calibrated to the same standard/at all IIRC. As with everything else recently, the cost of maintaining the machinery has probably gone up, so has th ecost of th eenergy to run it etc. etc.

Buy your own pump and pressure gauge instead if you feel so aggrieved. An extra 30p every couple of weeks to maintain a vitally important bit of what keeps you and your family safely adhered to the road - or alternatively just saves you the cost of replacing tyres & possibly suspension components prematurely due to wear caused by incorrect pressures. All for £15 a year? Doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

Perhaps the Government should hand out free Uniroyal Rainsports too, as some people have illegal tyres.

If someone is willing to run a dangerous car for the sake of 50p, let Darwin sort it out.

I have my own compressor at home which you are welcome to use for the heavily discounted rate of 25p for as long as you like in any 24hour period. Price does not include petrol from Cheshire to my house on the Isle of Wight, or the £40 you will need each time for a return ferry, but hey-ho, you're sticking it to the petrol station man hey?
