Buying private plate without car

Hi all

I am in the process of building a Ford GT40 kit car. The car uses all new components so when finished should be issued with a new reg number rather than a Q plate. What I then want to do is get a period correct 1965 reg number and transfer it to the car.

I've started looking for possible reg numbers for sale that I like but as the car is not finished and registered I won't have a vehicle to transfer the new number to. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to buy the number and hold it until my car is finished and if so what is the process?

stick it straight onto retention. you then have 12 months to get it onto a car, or renew the retention.
