Insuring a car not registered in my name.

I have a vehicle that has been given to me by a friend to use whilst my vehicle is off the road. I am not the legal owner or registered keeper but need to check, am I allowed to insure the vehicle?

Yes. If you look on price comparison sites for example the supermarket which starts with money. They have an option to say "I am not the registered keeper"

Is your own vehicle still insured? It may be worth giving your insurance company a ring and seeing what they can do wrt a temporary vehicle - I borrowed an Aygo when my VX was off the road and I think it cost me £22 for the week. That's with an insurance company named after a certain naval rank.

The only thing you need to consider here is if your mate already has the car insured.

I once wanted to insure a mates car for a month, but was reminded that no single vehicle can have two insurance policies attached. The recommendation was to have my mate add me as a named driver.

The vehicle is not insured, he had taken it off the road as he had got a new car so was sat idle and kindly offered up the car for my use.
