Which Astra model would be the quickest?

Which 1.6 Vauxhall Astra model would be the quickest round the Top Gear track?

I had a thought about it as I have a Astra H 1.6 myself & it's some what bloated compared to it's predesessors. The Astra J however ......

There was a 180bhp version at one time that had the same engine as the VXR Corsa. That is good for 220bhp with ecu upgrade as long as cylinder 4 does not grenade.

Estate version of that would be a bit of a q car and could give Golf GTI drivers a bit of a fright in a straight line.

I reckon a late Astra B (Kadett D) with a 1.6 injection engine would be fastest.

Don't be silly. Obviously a 1.7cdti will be the quickest when mapped we all know that. Ha ha

I reckon it would be the latest model. The older engines which are 1.6 will be 8 valve, but the modern ones are 16 valve. Tyre and suspension tech has been getting better/cheaper. I do recognise that cars have been getting heavier too, but I think that the handling/braking/tyre/more efficient engine tech would offset these things.

Very quick for its time. 2l turbo lsd iirc and 6 speed box. 0-60 of around 7 secs or so and a top end of 145mph which for its time for a manufacturer spec car was pretty rapid. Basically a calibra turbo except lighter and different body.

They had a bit of a rep in sa and were used by plod.
