'You're brave, People just aren't buying cars'
Discussion
It's strange how people say this to me when I mention that I've gone back to car sales again after a 2.5 year break.
The whole sucking through the teeth then saying 'brave, people aren't buying cars anymore' thing is a load of crap.
The dealership I work for (the same one I left 2.5 years ago incidentally) is making more money and selling more cars than ever before.
The main difference is that people who are buying cars seem to be the cash rich, rather than those having cars on finance and that people expect a better deal than ever before.
Just thought I'd share my experiences.

People are seriously now in the habit of saying things like 'because of the current financial circumstances...' It is getting on my nerves a bit. Sure, things aren't like they were in 2005 for example, but we aren't in a recession and unemployment is down on what it was last year. Yet, the world and his wife is still immensely pessimistic about everything.
I think its time we started to just get on with things again, rather than assume another banking apocalypse is just around the corner.
(Ok so the greek thing is bad... but still...)

Interesting thread. I left the the trade about 3 years ago, i currently earn half as much as i did back then in sales. One local dealer in particular is always recruiting new sales execs (why i wonder?) and i am sometimes tempted. I wasn't bad at sales and could handle the hours, but my current job is relatively secure and I'm just concerned of having a few 'bad' months and ending up on the dole which would be far worse!

I just halved my basic to go back to it. It's a risk, but the best things in life normally are!MarJay said:

Have you not seen the recent figures from several high street chains? Retail is really struggling. My car experience is a few months ago, in a VW dealership the first weekend of the new registration period. I expected it would be busy with people thinking about buying 11 plate cars, but it was almost deserted. We spent several hours there on the Sunday and there were only a handful of other people in the dealership in that time.
Basic is puny, 13.5k with a car. 15k without
My target is new and used and at 100% is about 2k in commission. Hitting 120% of new and used gets you a higher % on used and a better amount per new.
Extra money on finance sales and extras such as RTI and warranty sales.
You need to be able to sell the whole range of products to maximize your earnings.
Two of the team I work with are well established (10 years service) and both earn circa 60k. Not bad for selling Renaults and other used cars tbfh

It may well have changed since then though

Out of interest, how much can you generally earn as a decent salesman for a main dealer?
What is the general pay structure re basic + commission/bonus etc? Do the 'prestige' marques pay more?
Apologies if this comes across as intrusive, just curious.
Best months £8000 - 9000What is the general pay structure re basic + commission/bonus etc? Do the 'prestige' marques pay more?

Worst months (usually December when it is dead) £1500
Usually a low basic (£10-12k) with a percentage (between 8 and 14%) of margin retained on the deal. A crap deal might earn you £30, I once sold a couple a car each and made £1100 in commission out of them. Extra money for selling add ons, finance, GAP, PPP, paint protection etc.
