I'm about to buy a car today, quick question chaps.....

Morning all, i shall be making my way shortly to pick up a 2008 XKR.
Quick question, the car is being sold at a small car dealers which just deal in second hand cars up to a value of seven grand but they were selling a 2008 XKR. The car apparently belongs to the owner of the dealers. When speaking to a salesman the other day i'm pretty sure he said there is still some main dealer warranty remaining on the car but when i called Jaguar yesterday they confirmed there was not at that it ran out in January. I plan on putting a Jaguar main dealer warranty on the car but wanted to confirm that i should still be covered by law for 3 months parts and labour as i'm buying the car through a dealer? Is this correct? also there isn't a chance that when i buy the car they then say it was a private sale and it was just advertised on his dealer website because he is the owner? What documentation should i get to confirm it is a trade sell? Surely the reciept would be sufficient? or would it?
Some real amatuer questions here but i just want to make sure i don't do something stupid and shoot myself in the foot.

Dont see the problem here, ASK them if its being sold by them or privately for the owner... Make sure they provide you a business receipt for the purchase car then you have consumer rights, nothing more to add. Also I'd raise why the warranty is out of date when they've claimed its still in before you hand over the cash.

From what i've read there doesn't seem to be any clear guidelines. And just how good are these short term warranties with traders? anyone have any experiance where they had to claim on a 3 month warranty?

You'll have to make your own judgement on the value/reliability of the dealers warranty when you get there. Some dealers will totally ignore any problems you may have once your money is in their hands, others will bend over backwards to make you happy, above and beyond the call of duty!
In short, there are good and bad dealers, this will be as much of a factor in buying any car as the condition of the vehicle itself. Weigh up the person (private or trade) you are buying from as carefully as the car.

The amount of times I've been told by a dealer that the car is being sold by the owner as a 'private sale' leads me to think its probably a fairly common line given to try to circumvent any implied or actual warranty...

My dad offers 3 month warranties at our garage and we take claims very seriously. You will often find a small dealer will take it more seriously as it is his own reputation on the line and they rely on repeat business. We often help out where we can once the warranty has expired. Don't assume because the warranty is shorter you'll receive a lesser service.

Coincidently I also once went to look at an XKR vert and was told the car was being sold by the salesman on behalf of a friend of his.
