Mileage before big bills on cars less than 10 yrs old?
Discussion
I know that this is a very vague question but how many miles can you rack up on cars made in the last 10 years before you start needing to pay major bills, and what sort of differences are there between petrols and diesels?
To make things a little easier lets keep this to engines that are 2ltr + and are not highly tuned, just an average car.

what a pointless question. To make things a little easier lets keep this to engines that are 2ltr + and are not highly tuned, just an average car.
At a guess 1000 miles - 250,000+
I think this is a very fair question...There are LOADS of BMW 3 series, honda S2000s etc etc with 80,000 miles on the clock for cheap money. The question is, should you pay for a 40-60k mile car...or buy a 80k mile car...?
On the basis of FSH and kept on a driveway somewhere ordinary. Some town, some motorway....regular use.
Where do you draw the line on your high(ish) mileage car purchases? I'd avoid anything over 80k miles personally (for something like a BMW). A Ford snotter i would happily drive something at 100k miles, but probably less than 120k. A sports car e.g. Lotus Elise S2, id probably try to stay under 60k as they generally would be driven harder and be more stressed.

My Omega is on 171k and 11 years old. Apart from cam belt every 40k miles and servicing the only big bill was the oil cooler failing at 75k which cost ~£300 to fix.
Front Wishbones about every 40k miles as well , pretty much a consumable with Omegas but only £150 to replace both.
The only unusual part on mine was failed rear dampers. Being an elite it has air suspension and only vauxhall sell them at £120 each damper ! If it was a non elite model dampers are about £40.
Depends how you define a big bill really ? Biggest I had was £800 (including parts and labour) but that was just due to everything going at once - New disks and pads all round, service, fuel filter, cam belt, aux belt and pulley, rocker cover gaskets and some other stuff that I cant recall but it was pretty much every serviceable item decided to end its life at the same time. This was at about 120k miles.

I had a Mondeo on an 03 plate. In 2008 with 75k on it, it refused to start with a funny noise on the starter motor. DMF, clutch and starter needed replacement at £1150.
3 months later at 84k I got the flashing glowplug of doom light and loss of power (limp home), needed new injectors @ £1500.
6 months after that at around 96k the rear subframe bushes split, though that was only around £500
3 months later the power steering pump went, so I drove it to the dealers service court, walked up to the showroom and chopped it in for a CMAX
(ETA, forgot the two crank pulleys it ate)
(ETa again, mileage discrepancy)
