Introduced in 1979 as an AWD Crossover SUV (seem familiar to much of today's market place??)

Available in multiple body styles including wagon, saloon and coupe.







There was even a sporty SX/4 too! (which I have to say looks rather fab )

Well it does seem to have predicted the 5series GT/X6 fad for making a variety of incredibly ugly and pointless cars on one platform.

As a kid I had one of those yearly magazine / book things that was called something like "International automobile guide" or something. Basically it was just a catalogue of every car that was available for sale internationally and it was great because you could see all of the cars that WEREN'T available in the UK. Brilliant and I loved the AMC stuff - I thought it was great! And I loved the old school Jeep Grand Wagoneer too, that old body style just looked great.

And yes, it was way ahead of its time. Shame AMC wasnt. They were well behind the time and while the majority of US cars of the era were crap, the AMC stuff was crappier even more! Great idea, poorly executed and AMC died a death in the 80's I believe. Lets not forget this is the same company that brought us the Gremlin and Pacer....

Nice shades of brown too. I wonder if it had velour on the inside too? Oh, you can just imagine the interior now....

For a car to be ahead of its time then logically there must a be a time for when the car is suited too.

The Audi A2 was such a car being a tiny light 4 seater that sipped fuel and was wonderfully packaged

The original Honda Insight was also a car well ahead of its time.

So either you are correct and we are yet to reach the time when a stupid looking crap car covered in plastic and on stilts is perfect for the age or your speaking rubbish

Audi AllRoads? Those stupid Polos with the same treatment? Subaru Legacy Outbacks? And now we're onto more insidious fake offroaders like Jukes, Qashquais, X6s et al.....

So yes, it appears these cars were ahead of their time for the st trend of everyone wanting to pretend they have offroad vehicles so that they can look like they have 'active' lifestyles....

Yep proper AWD with a viscous centre diff, think it even had a low speed transfer box too.
